Our Natural Resource Operations Supervisor, 

  • Travels between sites, cleans facilities on a rotating schedule, and prioritizes site visits.
  • Mows/trims grass and brush, posts signs, applies herbicides, maintains roadways and parking areas.
  • Routinely repairs in the areas of carpentry, electrical, and plumbing.
  • Coordinates the work of engineering crews and contractors.
  • Recruits, makes hiring recommendations, mentors, trains, and evaluates performance of staff.
  • Works with neighboring landowners and user groups to explain agency land management policy or work toward mutually agreeable resolutions.
  • Writes reports and applies for grants.
  • Prepares permit applications and interacts with permitting agencies.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:    
    1. Most work occurs outdoors in any weather conditions and around the public – sites include uneven ground and slippery surfaces. 
    2. Frequent walking, bending, stooping, and occasional carrying/lifting objects or equipment – routinely picking up, lifting or loading litter and other discarded items sometimes in excess of 40 pounds such as couches, appliances or other large items. 
    3. Some work occurs in a shop and office setting.
  • Schedule:   
    1. Typically, four ten-hour days/week, but sometimes unscheduled work week with occasional long or unusual hours, including working at night or split days.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Frequent daily travel, sometimes overnight, within the region to and between various access sites in all types of weather conditions.
    2. Occasional travel outside region to attend meetings and training.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Hand and power tools (gas and electric) including, but not limited to, chainsaws, brush cutters, blowers, welders. 
    2. Heavy equipment: one-ton pickup with utility bed, trailers, tractors/farm equipment, forklifts, backhoes, and loaders. 
    3. Cell phones to respond in a timely manner to agency, public or partner inquiries and requests via email, phone or text.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Frequent direct in-person interactions with the public in the field on a daily basis as well as over the phone and through written correspondence. 
    2. Contact with customers may be contentious and complaint in nature. 
    3. May occasionally attend neighborhood, sports club, or public meetings.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in agronomy, horticulture, forest science, or a closely related field. 

          OR

  • Five (5) years of experience as a supervisor of crews performing natural resource labor management activities.

         AND

  • One (1) year of experience as a staff assistant performing professional natural resource management projects or tasks. 

    OR

  • Equivalent years of demonstrated experience may be considered.

Please note: College education in a natural resource field or equivalent professional or technical experience will substitute, year-for-year, for up to four (4) years of the crew supervision experience AND one (1) year of experience as a staff assistant performing professional natural resource management projects or tasks.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • First Aid Training (may be obtained after hire)
  • Public Pesticide Applicators License (may be obtained after hire)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Two (2) years of technical or professional experience in a forest nursery.

Knowledge of:

  • Natural resource access site operation and maintenance.
  • State and federal permitting related to building and work in and around water.
  • Fishing, hunting, and other natural resource related recreation.
  • Chemical herbicide application.
  • Personal computer hardware and software (Microsoft Office).

Experience with:

  • Effectively supervising employees.
  • Developing work plans for multiple employees.
  • Speaking and writing effectively.
  • Following prescribed protocols and procedures.
  • Using and instructing others on the safe use of power equipment, tractors, and hand tools.
  • Effectively communicating with employees and the public orally and in writing.
