Employee will assist with propagation of native plants for ecological restoration projects. Activities include all phases of plant propagation using various propagation strategies for a wide variety of native plants grown from seed as well as from dormant hardwood cuttings. Activities also include fertilization and irrigation during seedling establishment phases. In addition to sowing seed and transplanting, employee will take part in basic nursery operations and routine greenhouse chores, assist in the prevention and treatment of diseases, and miscellaneous related tasks.
Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather required. General knowledge of botany, ecology, natural history or horticulture is desired. This job is suited to those interested in pursuing a career in horticulture, ecological restoration, and native plant propagation.
Students will learn/improve their knowledge of: plant taxonomy and physiology; botanical terminology; native plant identification from seedling to mature stage; species scientific and common names; native plant propagation techniques; plant disease and pathogen ID and treatment; plant phenology; seed dormancy; ecological restoration techniques.
