Position Announcement: Membership & Strategic Partnerships Manager

The mission of the Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE), formerly the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE), is to improve the scientific basis of environmental decision-making. Operating in the interface between science and policy, GCSE engages both scientists and decision-makers across all levels of government in a nonpartisan manner. Founded in 1990, GCSE is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

About This Position
The Membership & Strategic Partnerships Manager will play a critical role in supporting, managing, and growing GCSE’s dynamic domestic and international partnerships with members, government entities, peer organizations, and other strategic partners. This role focuses predominantly on membership and partnership management and administration, with some
opportunity to support member program development.

Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
● Membership and Partner Engagement
○ Maintain regular member outreach.
○ Initiate contact and proactively engage and welcome new members.
○ Coordinate member-focused activities, such as the Science Dialogues and Member Meetings, to ensure current members have a positive and worthwhile membership experience.
○ Write and design effective emails to communicate key opportunities to members.

  ○ Provide support to the co-chairs of the Communities of Practice (CoPs), multi-
institutional technical working groups.

● Membership and Partner Management
○ Develop and implement strategies for retention of existing members and recruitment and cultivation of new members, including the creation of new member benefits and regular solicitation of member feedback.
○ Maintain accurate records of members and key contacts through Constant Contact, Google Sheets, and Salesforce CRM.
○ Track US and international membership dues received and outstanding.
○ Manage and pursue membership renewal efforts and recruitment of lapsed or new members across sectors through email, mailings, and phone calls.

  ○ In concert with the Executive Team, develop effective communication materials to promote GCSE membership, coordinate website content and functionality to enhance membership and strategic partnership programs.
○ Provide high-quality customer service experience for renewing and prospective members.
○ Track US and international membership development in the progress and determine next steps.
○ Advance membership strategic activities to nonprofits and corporations
○ Curate content for and foster engagement in LinkedIn or other members-only groups

Logistics
● Location: Washington, D.C.; remote until safe to return to an in-office environment.
● Timing: Ideally starting in March 2021.
● Compensation Range: $57,000-70,000 commensurate based on experience with excellent benefits.

● Persuasive, efficient communicator including writer, with demonstrated experience in preparing engaging content, including proposals, reports, and other communication for diverse audiences
● Articulate and comfortable picking up the phone and calling people to track down information, following up on lapsed memberships, and responding to inquiries.
● Strong project management and organizational skills, with an eye for detail and the ability to prioritize work and juggle multiple tasks at once
● Ability to identify solutions in a fast-paced environment, work autonomously and be proactive in approach
● Demonstrated ability to deal well with multicultural settings in representing an organization: a sense of teamwork and community

● Relationship-Building and Maintenance: Outstanding ability to build and sustain relationships with external and internal stakeholders, including understanding others’ goals and working to mutually solve others’ challenges – particularly with senior-level, external stakeholders.
● Strategic Acumen: Outstanding ability to identify new opportunities. Strong understanding of and commitment to GCSE’s core mission, to accelerate the scientific basis of environmental decision-making
● Operational Excellence: Ability to balance multiple demands, highly organized, with demonstrated success working in fast-paced environments, solving problems creatively, and delivering timely & measurable results.
● Professionalism & Communication: Highest standard of professional conduct and communication; strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
● Entrepreneurial Drive: Resourcefulness, agility, and comfort working on a small team, in quickly changing environments, including eagerness to wear multiple hats as needed.
● Prior Work Experience: Please note that though we are not setting a baseline educational requirement, this is not an entry-level position. A successful candidate should demonstrate significant relevant work and educational experience.
