The Media Manager (job ID# 50077) will be part of a team using a variety of media channels to share stories about The Nature Conservancy’s work in Washington and beyond in order to build understanding, visibility and support.

We are seeking candidates who can join us on our journey toward greater cultural competency, equitable storytelling and asset-based framing, and a commitment to racial, social, and environmental equity, including living into our equity statement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Media Manager supports The Nature Conservancy’s conservation goals by identifying and strategically sharing stories across a variety of platforms and channels, with a primary focus on earned media placements. Closely collaborating with marketing, conservation, science and other teams, the Media Manager will identify and elevate the stories that best highlight our work and goals, ultimately identifying the best media channels to strategically share those stories.

Strategic Earned Media (60%)
A primary channel for storytelling is earned media, including surfacing the best stories, matching to appropriate news outlets and working with conservation staff and others to achieve the placement.

  • Cultivate strategic relationships with a broad range of media contacts on a local, state and regional level, including media in and of historically marginalized communities.
  • Identify stories and implement tactics to gain strategic media coverage, actively identifying and engaging target audiences.
  • Develop and place strategic op-eds, news releases and earned media stories.
  • Lead on other public relations and visibility-building activities, including identifying and coordinating media tours.
  • Serve as primary contact for all media inquiries.

Cross-Channel Storytelling & General Marketing (40%)
The Media Manager will also share our stories through existing and emerging channels, including setting organic social and digital strategies, paid social media placements, paid media and sponsorships, public relations, and through internal and external TNC communications channels.

  • Lead our chapter’s digital and social media strategy, partnering with internal collaborators to create and leverage cross-channel strategies that achieve marketing and communications objectives; report on progress by setting metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Manage paid media placements, including paid social media and strategic sponsorships.
  • Elevate our chapter’s conservation work by writing and reviewing content to be shared on internal and external platforms (blogs, emails, etc.)
  • Ensure brand and visual style guidelines are followed.
  • Coordinate with video and photography vendors and internal staff to leverage visual assets for compelling storytelling.
  • Support public and government relations communications efforts.
  • Collaborate with Marketing Manager and Marketing Director on crisis communications.

RESPONSIBILITES & SCOPE
Level of Position: The Media Manager is a mid-level position with autonomy to shape work as part of team.

  • Does not supervise any staff but will coordinate the work of peers on project teams. May supervise volunteers, interns or temporary staff.
Serves as team lead on assigned media initiatives.

Within the scope of the position, the Media Manager will:

  • Manage and implement projects.
  • Develop and execute media strategies, closely collaborating with key stakeholders to achieve support.
  • Be a key contributor in our chapter’s efforts toward equitable storytelling and reaching more audiences, including those we have historically ignored or been unsuccessful in reaching.
  • Be responsible and accountable for meeting assigned project goals and objectives.
  • Act independently within program goals and resolve issues independently.
  • May work with vendors/other parties to execute projects/deliverables.
