MARINE FISHERIES DATA ANALYST 
FISH & WILDLIFE RESEARCH SCIENTIST 1 

 

Fish Program – Marine Fish Science Unit 
Port Townsend, Washington – Jefferson County 

 

Anticipated Appointment Length: 8 Months 
April 1, 2024 – December 1, 2024

Lead and coordinate the analysis of highly varied and complex datasets, including historical and contemporary bottom trawl survey data collected throughout Puget Sound. 

Fit highly sophisticated statistical and mathematical models to almost four decades of marine fishery survey data.

With your knowledge and innovation, you will recommend best-fit models and produce high-quality figures of results and other data visualizations.

Our Marine Fisheries Data Analyst,

Fits statistical models to large datasets, performs model diagnostics and creates visualizations of model output:  

  • Develops scripts in R, or comparable program, to arrange and format large volumes of data for model fitting. 
  • Implements spatio-temporal models, e.g., sdmTMB or alternative, using R and fits multiple models to species-specific data. 
  • Evaluates alternative model parameterizations and uses appropriate model diagnostics and model selection methods. 
  • Coordinates among project collaborators, both internal and external to the Department. 
  • Researches the scientific literature and provides recommendations on the best-supported analytical approaches to complex research questions. 

Performs routine QA/QC procedures on multiple, large datasets to identify data entry or other systematic errors: 

  • Develops scripts to identify data outliers, produces summary statistics and data visualizations. 
  • Identifies any data inconsistencies, works with IT or other staff to make data corrections. 
  • Develops scripts to streamline and standardize naming conventions among multiple, disparate databases.

Communicates complex scientific questions and concepts with wide-ranging audiences, such as the public, tribal governments, other stakeholder groups, and academia: 

  • Creates presentations that outline methodology and summarizes key findings for scientific and lay audiences. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards: 
    1. This position works primarily in an office setting. 
  • Schedule: 
    1. Typically, Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. 
    2. Work outside of these hours may be assigned as needed to complete work tasks and may include night and weekend hours. 
    3. Leave requests and approvals will be processed as outlined in agency policy and the effective Collective Bargaining Agreement. 
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Single-day trips may be required to attend meetings and/or give presentations.
    2. Infrequent overnight travel to other areas of Washington, for up to one week at a time, may occur to attend conferences, trainings, etc. 
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Standard office equipment, personal computer, operation of agency vehicles. 
  • Customer Interactions: 
    1. Interacts with WDFW customers on an infrequent basis; occasionally encounters unfriendly interactions requiring an ability to remain calm, professional, and diplomatic.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Doctoral degree with a major in mathematics or statistics with emphasis in animal population or management, natural resource science or management with an emphasis in mathematics or statistics relative to animal population biology or management.

OR

  • A Master’s degree in wildlife, habitat, or fisheries science, biology, zoology, or in mathematics with emphasis on animal population biology, or closely allied field.

OR

  • Five (5) years of professional experience as a Fish and Wildlife Biologist 4 or equivalent.

AND 

Experience: 

  • Two (2) years of professional experience designing statistical or mathematical research in population biology or population management or designing and conducting wildlife, habitat, or fish-related research studies. 

Published Articles: 

  • Two (2) articles published or in press in refereed literature.  One (1) article must be as senior author, the second article must be as senior or secondary author.

Please Note:

  • Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.

 

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • A Valid Driver’s License. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

Experience in: 

  • Applying advanced statistical and/or mathematical modeling approaches to fisheries data and with statistical programming languages and platforms such as R, Python, etc. 
  • Organizing structured data, working with large datasets, and developing queries using SQL or alternative languages. 
  • Presenting research findings to scientific and general audiences, communication skills, and the ability to communicate complex scientific information to a general, non-scientific audience.

Ability to:  

 

  • Identify and implement analytical approaches to address complex scientific questions and draw evidence-based conclusions. 
  • Set clear project objectives, develop a clear work plan and interim project milestones, and independently meet deadlines. 
  • Coordinate projects with other scientists and stakeholders and foster a collaborative and respectful work environment. 

Familiarity with: 

  • Marine fish species native to the Pacific Northwest and/or the ecology of Puget Sound. 
  • Geospatial analysis principles and related software such as ArcGIS or QGIS. 
  • Tribal co-management principles, fishery and environmental stakeholder engagement best-practices, and the public process as it relates to natural resource decision-making.
