Great American Outdoors Act Strike Force

The Great American Outdoors Act is a program formed in 2020 to reduce the maintenance backlog across the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Hired as part of a Strike Force, these positions will work alongside current Service staff to complete infrastructure projects such as levee reconstruction, facility repairs, and building demolition.

These projects are in many locations, thus a significant amount of the incumbent’s time will be spent traveling for multiday to projects across the contiguous U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii.

Position Highlights:

  • The permanent positions include a paid government move of you and your personal belongings, including immediate family. 
  • The term positions are 1 to 4 years in length.
  • These positions are Wage Grade (WG) pay series, different than General Schedule series (GS) and applicants do not need previous federal experience.
  • This strike force will travel to other locations frequently. During travel your meals and hotel are paid for by the government and are often to beautiful remote locations for 5-14 days with potential for overtime pay.

These positions often lead to on the job experience that can qualify you for numerous other positions. Our maintenance professionals often step up to higher wage levels after a couple years as well as into totally different programs such as Wildlife Biologists, Refuge Managers, or even Park Superintendents!

As a Maintenance Worker your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assisting other maintenance staff by lifting, carrying, holding materials and performing related tasks in repairing structures.
  • Maintaining station grounds by mowing lawns, trimming shrubs, weed eating, spraying weeds with chemicals, etc.
  • Cleaning all facilities.
  • Picking up trash along designated routes of travel on the refuge.
  • Operating gasoline and diesel vehicles.
  • Washing and fueling vehicles and equipment and performing such services as lubricating, checking oil and water, etc.
  • Performing operator maintenance on equipment.
  • Applying interior/exterior paints, stains and varnishes to masonry, dry wall, stucco, or metal surfaces.
  • Maintaining or carrying out minor repair to toilets, sinks, traps and water softeners.

As a Engineering Equipment Operator your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Operates a variety of gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler- type traction and attachments.
  • Operates front-end attachments to remove piles of dirt, to load trucks, or for the digging of earth or gravel.
  • Operates bulldozer, angle dozer, or other attachments to push refuse into an open pit or to fill in demolished building sites and cover with earth, to clean ditches, to fill holes in dikes, or to excavate ditches and ponds.
  • Operates farm tractors with auxiliary equipment for farming, mowing, maintaining dikes, and other related activities.
  • Operates crawler tractor in forested terrain in piling of slash, clearing brush, small trees, tree stumps, and rocks, and developing fire lanes.
  • Conducts disking, chopping, mowing, rotovating, digging, loading and leveling to a rough grade for the purpose of ditch cleaning, culvert installation, creating and maintaining trails and fire breaks, patching potholes, and piling slash for various purposes.
  • Services equipment by checking fluids, lubricating, and performing safety checks.
  • Performs minor repairs which include replacement of hoses, belts, fuses, light bulbs, etc. that do not require dismantling large components of the equipment such as radiators, hydraulic tanks, alternators, tracks, etc.
  • Keeps written maintenance records for all equipment operated.
