**This position is Time-Limited position contigent upon extension of Federal Funding.**

The North Carolina Forest Service is designated as an emergency response Division and is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs. The NC Forest Service (NCFS) provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina. This position is housed within the Technical Development, Planning and Utilization Branch of the Forest Management & Forest Development Division of NCFS.
 
This position serves as the project coordinator for the grant-funded NC Woods for Wildlife Conservation Initiative, a multi-partner effort to engage more woodland owners in forest management and certification, enhance habitat for species of conservation concern, and promote the conservation of imperiled habitats, including longleaf and bottomland hardwood forests.  This involves implementing, monitoring, and reporting progress on deliverables; administering subgrant agreements; coordinating outreach, communication, training, and workshop events; record-keeping; developing publications, exhibits and website content; and collaborating with partner agencies and organizations.  Position serves as the agency lead supporting longleaf pine restoration efforts in NC. Position will provide state-wide leadership for the annual range-wide longleaf accomplishment report, a product of the America’s Longleaf Restoration Initiative. Position will also provide leadership and support to the NC Longleaf Coalition.      
 
Duty station will be in either Wake County or Johnston County and will be discussed during interview.
Duty Station Location: 512 N Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC   27604 or 2411 Old US Highway 70 West, Clayton, NC   27520.
 
Work hours are typically 8-5 M-F.  Extended times of readiness will involve evening, holiday, and/or weekend work. Must be available after working hours during fire danger periods and times of emergency response.  Overnight travel will be required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of the ecology of forest types and tree species occurring in NC.
  • Experience in the practice of forestry, ecology, or wildlife biology.
  • Ability to communicate technical forestry concepts and information to diverse audiences through oral and written means.
  • Ability to coordinate and deliver trainings and educational workshops.
  • Ability to coordinate and implement outreach activities targeting forest landowners and the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with conservation organizations, agency personnel and the public.

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:  

  • Experience managing longleaf pine or bottomland hardwood ecosystems.
  • Experience in prescribed fire.
  • Knowledge and experience related to Geographical Information Systems.
  • Experience writing and managing grants.
  • Project management and budgeting experience.
  • Experience in team collaboration and leading teams.
  • Completion of coursework in dendrology, silviculture or forest mensuration.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
