The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Northeast Region has an exciting opportunity within our Engineering/Surveying Department. We are seeking a Professional Land Surveyor who can supervise a field land survey crew of two.  This position will work out of the Region office, in Colville, WA, and supports timber sale operations. This crew also supports other programs as workload allows such as Recreation, Engineering, Right of Ways, and Natural Areas.

Duties
Responsibilities:

  • Direct land survey crew and lead them in researching survey and title information; recovering and maintaining original GLO corners; re-establishing lost GLO corners; establishing state property corners and lines in support of DNR land management activities; producing preliminary and final survey maps and legal descriptions; filing records of surveys and land corner records; producing topographic and as-built surveys.

  • Work proactively with region staff to construct an action plan for land survey projects based on program needs and agency priorities.  Works with region points of contact. Keeps points-of-contacts up to date with estimated timelines and cost of projects and keeps land survey unit supervisor informed of changes to the plans.

  • Keeping track of subordinate’s time, ensuring time and leave slips are accurately filled out and submitted in a timely fashion, and annual performance evaluations. Supporting employees with training opportunities and encouraging mentoring within the group.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor in the State of Washington.

  • Competent in processing data collection by RTK GPS and total stations and reducing level notes.

  • Experience with: land survey principles, procedures, and practices; basic statutes and other laws pertaining to the establishment, locating, and defining of corners, monuments, lines, and boundaries of land; professional standards of land surveying and mapping; computer skills and applications; land records management; state plane coordinate system; supervisory and management practices.

  • Experience in GLO retracement and original corner recovery.

Working Conditions: 

  • The position’s assigned duty station is the Northeast Region headquarters office in Colville, WA. The working environment includes office duties in the indoor setting, with potential extensive hours sitting at a desk or computer. The working environment also includes fieldwork outdoors that may involve arduous activity carrying heavy equipment and or the use of chainsaws and/or other cutting implements on steep and uneven terrain in varying weather conditions.

  • The position normally requires 1-2 hours of travel per day from the Northeast Region office to the job site when working in the field. When working outside of the Colville area, the incumbent must be able to travel frequently and stay out of town for extended periods.

  • A valid driver’s license and two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Certification as a Certified Federal Surveyor (CFedS).

  • Experience in retracing Mineral Surveys, Homestead Entry Surveys, Indian Allotment Surveys, and fractional sections.
