The Northeast Region of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has a Land Surveyor 2 position available, that just might be the job for you. This is a lead position that is part of a two person crew working under the direction of the Region Surveyor, responsible for providing land boundary and topographic mapping for the DNR in some of the top working forests and recreation sites in the State. Field work accounts for the majority of the duties and involves the use of state of the art survey grade Global Positioning System equipment, semi-robotic total station and field data collection software for corner reconnaissance, searching for U.S. General Land Office (GLO) original evidence and evidence of privately established corner monuments, traversing, corner setting, mapping, and posting boundary lines.

Duties
Responsibilities:
Field Tasks include:  Coordinate and perform daily survey crew activities, plan and execute RTK and total station control and mapping surveys, locate and post boundaries, topographic features, rights of ways, utilities, and site surveys. Safely utilize survey equipment, trucks, ATV’s, snowmobiles, chainsaws and small tools. Supervise survey crew in the field on proper procedures, use of survey equipment and efficient coordination of surveys. Make field calculations to determine the direction of the survey.

Office Tasks include: Reduce field notes and verify data collection files. Research survey and title records and organize project job files. Perform calculations and preliminary map drafting using a computer. Assist the Region Surveyor in checking the final survey map. Maintain or supervise the maintenance of the field survey equipment. Compose land corner notes for inclusion on a record of survey.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications: 

  • Four years of experience performing land survey work, including two years as a skilled land survey technician at Engineering Aide 3 or equivalent. Two years of college work with a major emphasis in surveying/geomatics, forestry, engineering or other curriculum that contained courses in boundary and topographic surveying may be substituted for two years’ experience.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Land surveying and mapping principles, procedures and practices
    • Basic statutes and other laws pertaining to locating, defining, and establishing corners, lines and boundaries of land.
  • Experience using computer programs such as; Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrates good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills by having the ability to resolve conflicts, write effectively, and communicate with diverse groups both internal and external.
  • Promote cooperation within the work unit, recognizes and encourages the behaviors that contribute to team work.
  • Ability to:
    • Plan and execute complex and high precision surveying projects

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:

  • The large majority of work is usually performed with at least one other person in forested, mountainous terrain. Incumbent must be able to perform the duties of surveying in inclement weather conditions ranging from frigid temperatures with considerable snow to temperatures in excess of 100 degrees while traversing rough terrain and packing delicate instruments. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds in order to pack necessary survey equipment (tripods, total station, gps equipment, brushing tools, etc.), or lift stuck snowmobiles and ATV’s.
  • May require 2 or more hours of travel per day from the Northeast Region office to the job site. When working outside the Colville area, incumbent must be able to travel frequently and stay out of town during the normal work week. The employee is eligible for per-diem for meals and lodging costs when in travel status, except when otherwise provided.
  • A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge and experience using AutoCAD with land survey extensions such as Carlson Survey.
  • Experience analyzing land and title records.
  • Knowledge and experience using ESRI GIS software.
  • Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) certification.
  • GLO retracement and restoration experience.
  • Real time kinematic experience.
  • State plane coordinate systems.
