The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Engineering Aide 3 position works with the best Cadastral Land Surveyors in the State of Washington as part of a two to five (2-5) person crew, responsible for providing Land Boundary, Topographic, and Specialized Mapping. Field work accounts for the majority of duties and involves the use of state of the art field equipment in order to search for and retrace U.S. General Land Office (GLO) original evidence dating back to the 1800’s, and privately establish corners in some of the top working forests and recreation sites in the State. At the same time, advance your career by learning how to research the history of the Public Land Survey System in Washington State through records of counties, cities, state agencies, and private businesses; all while assisting in the creation of modern land survey records for use by future generations.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:
A key team member of the Department of Natural Resources State Land Survey Unit working on State Trust Lands throughout the State of Washington.
Primarily a Field Position assisting in the:

  • Traversing, Location, Verification, and Establishment of State Ownership Boundaries
  • Recovering Original U.S. General Land Office Monuments and Evidence
  • Performing of Topographic Surveys
  • Performing of Specialized Mapping or Projects
  • Creation of Survey Maps, Records, Field Notes
Maintains and uses:
  • State of the Art GNSS Systems, Total Stations, Data Collectors
  • Field and Office Land Survey Software
  • Computer Aided Drafting Software
  • 4 Wheel Drive Crew Vehicles
  • All-Terrain Vehicles
  • Chainsaws
A DNR Land Survey Technician primarily assists a Land Survey Crew Chief in performing skilled land survey work in the field under the direction and supervision of a Licensed Division Land Surveyor, and in accordance with Washington State RCWs, WACs, Federal regulations established in the 2009 Bureau of Land Management Manual of Survey Instruction, Department of Natural Resources policies and procedures, and applicable bargaining agreements.

As part of a team of five in our Chehalis Office this position is part of one of two, two person field crews providing land boundary and mapping for the Department of Natural Resources; the work is mostly located in the forests of the Puget Sound and Southwest Washington areas with travel to other parts of the state as needed.  
Field responsibilities of this position include:
  • Typically acting as the instrument person or chain person
  • Assisting and executing high precision surveys of State land boundaries
  • Use and effectively operate Robotic Total Stations and GNSS equipment
  • Taking detailed and legible field notes
  • Searching for boundary evidence
  • Verifying or establishing boundary corners
  • Posting boundary lines
Office responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in the research and interpretation of Title Records and Survey Records
  • Review, verify, reduce, and scan Field Notes
  • Prepare and complete Excel spreadsheets for database creation of Office Records.
  • Assist in the calculations of raw field data  
  • Assist in the preparation of Survey of Records, Land Corner Records, Topographic Maps, and Legal Descriptions
  • Maintaining survey equipment and supplies

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:  

  • Four years of experience in performing land survey work, including two years as a skilled land survey technician at Engineering Aide 2 or equivalent level.
    OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • The position’s assigned duty station is the DNR Chehalis Compound. Projects can be on any parcel of State Lands administered by DNR but are mostly located in the Department of Natural Resources Pacific Cascade Region. Position is often outdoors, in all terrain and weather conditions.
  • There is potential for extended travel periods depending on project locations. Employee is eligible for per diem for meals and lodging cost when in travel status, except when provided.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and experience researching and analyzing Land and Title Records.
  • Knowledge and experience using Carlson SurvCE, Carlson Survey, Leica Captivate, Leica Infinity, and/or other Field and Office Land Survey Specific software.
  • Knowledge and experience in the operation, maintenance, and adjustment of Total Stations, GNSS Receivers, and basic Field Survey equipment.
  • Knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office Software, including but not limited to Word and Excel.
  • Experience working in the woods and driving primitive roads.
  • Experience operating 4 wheel drive vehicles and All- Terrain Vehicles (ATV).
  • Experience operating and maintaining brush cutting tools.
