If you want a career in the great outdoors that combines history, modern technology, and adventure, here is a chance to have just that! The Northeast Region of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has a Land Survey Technician, Engineering Aide 3 position available.  

This position is part of a two-person survey crew working under the direction of the Region Surveyor, responsible for providing land boundary and topographic mapping for the DNR in some of the top working forests and recreation sites in the State. Fieldwork accounts for the majority of the duties and involves the use of state-of-the-art survey grade GNSS receivers, semi-robotic total station and field data collection software for corner reconnaissance, U.S. General Land Office (GLO) retracement and corner restoration from original evidence and evidence of privately established corner monuments, traversing, corner setting, topographic mapping, and posting boundary lines.

 

Duties

Responsibilities:
A DNR Land Survey Technician primarily assists the Land Survey Crew Chief in performing skilled land survey work in the field under the direction and supervision of the Region Surveyor and in accordance with Washington State RCW’s, WAC’s, Federal regulations in the BLM Manual of Surveying Instructions, Agency policies and procedures, and applicable bargaining agreements.

Field responsibilities of this position include :

  • Use and operation of  GNSS receivers, semi-robotic total station, and data collection software
  • Assist with the execution of high-precision surveys of State land boundaries
  • Recording clear, concise, and legible field notes and sketches
  • Search for and verify GLO corner evidence with original government notes
  • Set State corner monuments and post boundary lines
  • Safely operates four-wheel drive trucks, ATVs, and snowmobiles
Office responsibilities include:
  • Maintain survey equipment and ensure adequate supplies are available to support field operations
  • Assist with research and interpretation of historical survey and title records
  • Reviews, verifies, and reduces field notes and data collection files for accuracy and completeness

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in Land Surveying. College-level coursework with a major emphasis in Land Surveying or a related field such as engineering, forestry, or natural resources management may be substituted, year for year, for the required experience.
  • Experience using computer programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrates the ability to resolve conflicts, write effectively, and communicate with diverse groups both internal and external.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • The position’s assigned duty station is the DNR Northeast Region office in Colville. The large majority of work is usually performed with at least one other person in forested, mountainous terrain. The incumbent must be able to perform the duties of surveying in inclement weather conditions ranging from the cold of winter to hot summer days while traversing rough terrain and packing delicate instruments. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds in order to pack necessary survey equipment (tripods, total station, GPS equipment, brushing tools, etc.), or operate snowmobiles and ATVs.
  • Out-of-town travel is necessary on occasion. On some projects, you may be away from home on weekdays for several weeks.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years. 
Desired Qualifications:
  • Four years of experience in Land Surveying. College-level coursework with a major emphasis in Land Surveying or a related field such as engineering, forestry, or natural resources management may be substituted, year for year, for the required experience.
  • Experience with the public land survey system and in GLO retracement and original corner recovery.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or IntelliCAD, Leica survey products, and/or other Field and Office Land Survey Specific software.
  • Experience in the use and care of GNSS receivers and electronic total station, as well as recording field note data in notebooks and electronic data collectors.
