Transition Habitat Conservancy is a small but passionate organization dedicated to preserving land for all people in Southern California. Starting Wage: $22.00 / hour

Transition Habitat Conservancy’s Land Steward is primarily a field-based position. Many hours will be spent driving on 4WD dirt roads, walking on uneven desert terrain, and regularly camping in the desert elements. The position may be based in the Victorville, Barstow, Ridgecrest, or similar region in the high desert, and will be required to travel to Pinon Hills periodically to meet with organization staff.

Primary tasks:

• Monitor the roughly 150 parcels owned by Transition Habitat
• Complete drone pilot training for flying in restricted airspace
• Patrol and monitor restoration sites and management polygons
• Meet and assist BLM and contractors in the field
• Oversee restoration crews (AmeriCorps, SCA, CCC, or other hired crew)
• Collect monitoring data using iPad tablet, camera, GPS, and aerial drone
• Desert Restoration on closed OHV routes
• Perform Desert Tortoise transect monitoring with biologist
• Assist with Outreach Events
• Attend Land Management meetings and report regularly to Transition Habitat Manager
• Clearing and maintaining trails at the Portal Ridge Wildlife Preserve (camping on site)

Additional tasks may include:

• Compile monitoring reports
• GIS computer work
• Maintaining stewardship task spreadsheet
• Helping with stewardship tasks in Transition Habitat’s other conservation project areas

Desired Skills:

• Safe driving record and good 4WD abilities
• Background checks will be conducted for all final candidates
• Good attitude and communication skills with all team members
• Work independently without supervision
• Flexible work hours
• Willingness to work outdoors and camp in the Mojave Desert
