Job Summary
The forest health laboratory at the Weyerhaeuser Centralia Research Center focuses on the diagnosis of forest pests and novel research into seedling and forest disease prevention and treatment. As a laboratory assistant, you will be responsible for helping with the safe execution of day to day operations in the lab including preparation of culture media and microbiological transfers, sample preparation and morphological analysis, insect identification, basic molecular biology assays, and other tasks as assigned. A portion of this position will require assisting with tree and soil sampling in the forest and seedling nurseries.
The position will be 20 hours a week and is flexible M-F between 7 am – 6 pm. Additional hours may be available on an as needed basis. Pay is $17-20/hour, depending on experience. The job will be filled through Express Employment Professionals. Masks are required on site.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Commitment to working safely and adhere to all safety requirements
One year of laboratory coursework in biology, chemistry, environmental science, forestry, or a related field. A job with laboratory experience may be used as a substitute for laboratory coursework.
An understanding of basic biological and chemical processes, algebra, dilution calculations, and basic computer skills.
Ability to think critically and solve problems independently.
A positive, collaborative attitude and strong interpersonal skills.
Willingness to work in a standing position for several hours at a time and occasionally work in inclement weather conditions, walk several miles in a day, and carry up to 25 pounds over short distances.
Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
Desired Qualifications
Two years of university or community college laboratory based coursework in biology, chemistry, environmental science, forestry, or a related field; or two years of related laboratory job experience.
Experience with microbiological culture transfers, DNA extractions and PCR, growing plants in a greenhouse or field setting, and environmental field sampling.
