POSITION DUTIES:
Instructional Support

  • Operate the Instructional Media Room in Hitchcock Hall and provide media for a wide range of Biology courses. The large majority of media requests will be solutions with well-established recipes.
  • Communicate with faculty and course coordinators to ensure that media requests are filled. Requests may include plate pouring, maintenance of some cultures (algae, etc.), setting up equipment, etc.
  • Supervise and train undergraduate student helpers to prepare media.
  • Oversee EH&S safety procedures in the media room.
  • Keep the media prep facilities in working order.
  • Communicate regularly with ‘customers’ to foresee and plan for future scheduling issues.
  • Order supplies for the media facility and maintain thorough records.
  • Facilitate proper waste disposal.
  • Perform minor repairs or place service calls for larger repairs needed.

LSB Media and Research Support

  • Operate the LSB media room to support research efforts in labs throughout the new facility.
  • Provide autoclave services and maintenance.
  • Provide glassware services to labs.
  • Assist with safety compliance and management of chemical rooms in LSB.
  • Work with and manage undergraduate workers in a team effort to support lab media and glassware needs.

    Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • One year of college with course work emphasizing laboratory science OR one year’s experience as Laboratory Technician 1, or equivalent. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated understanding of math and chemistry needed to be successful in the position.
  • Basic lab and lab safety skills and knowledge.
  • Ability to prioritize to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and organize work responsibilities.
  • The ability to lift 50lbs; the ability to lift 20lbs of hot liquid.

The interview process will include an assessment of math and chemistry knowledge and a hands-on assessment of lab procedures and lab safety knowledge.
