JUVENILE SALMON TAGGING TECHNICIAN
SCIENTIFIC TECHNICIAN 2 (ST2)

 

Fish Program – Wild Salmon Production Evaluation Unit 

Auburn, Washington – King County

 

The salary listed does not include the 5% premium pay granted to all King County employees.

Anticipated Appointment Length: 4 months
 March 1, 2024 – June 28, 2024

Restore fish habitat on the lower Green River through fieldwork that monitors endangered species act (ESA) listed salmon and steelhead.

Envision yourself coordinating and conducting juvenile Chinook passive integrated transponder (PIT) tagging operations.

Duties

 

Some of what our Juvenile Salmon Tagging Technician will enjoy doing, 

Coordinate the passive integrated transponder (PIT) tagging project on juvenile Chinook salmon: 

  • Conduct and coordinate passive integrated transponder (PIT) tagging operations for juvenile Chinook on the Green River. 
  • Perform the daily tagging of the juvenile Chinook captured in the screw trap and collected from soos creek hatchery. 
  • Coordinate with King County biologist regarding tagging projects. 
  • Maintain tags, computer, gear, and equipment for tagging studies.          

 

Operate a juvenile salmon screw trap: 

  • Participate in the operation of a juvenile salmon screw trap when conditions permit, sampling the entire catch from trap at minimum twice a day.
  • Identify juvenile salmonids to species and enumerate (count) by age, origin, mark type and species. 
  • Externally mark a portion of the catch for release above the trapping location to estimate trapping efficiency. 
  • Collect biological data and samples from a portion of the catch of each species (length and scales samples). 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Approximately 90% of work will be conducted in the field. 
    • Trapping activities involve exposure to inclement weather conditions, frequent bending, kneeling, and lifting, handling, and lifting buckets with live fish weighing more than 50 pounds daily. 
    • Prolonged exposure of hands and fingers to cold water, and working in high and swift water.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • Work hours are non-scheduled. Typically, 40 hours per week, but will be expected to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays to accommodate operation of traps that fish 24/7. 
    • During periods of high stream flows or fish migrations, overtime will be required.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Minimal travel to other trapping locations, as well as to WDFW in Olympia may be required.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Passive integrated transponder (PIT) tagging equipment, electronic sampling equipment such as a coded wire tag (CWT) detection wand, cell phone, calculator, computer, hand tools (cleaning rakes, shovels, crowbars, sledgehammers), power tools (chain saws, drills), and fish collection gear (nets, seines, weirs, and screw traps).
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Will interact with sport fishermen, Tribal members, King County employees, WDFW hatchery staff and Private landowners.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

OR

  • Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

 

Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter hours of natural science classes.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:

  • Experience passive integrated transponder (PIT) tagging juvenile salmonids and working with PIT tag data.
  • Knowledge of safe live fish handling techniques.
  • Ability to identify juvenile and adult salmonids, lampreys, and other incidental catches.
  • Experience collecting and managing biological data in electronic databases.  
  • Experience working in research teams.
