Are you looking for an opportunity to dive into fishery management, where you’ll be “trapping” data and “reeling” in experience while making a splash in the field?
Assist with projects across the Science and Management Divisions of the Fish Program. Operate a rotary-screw trap to gather salmon recovery metrics, and conduct creel surveys in the upper Columbia River system.

Duties
-
Here are some things you will be doing in this role,
Juvenile Monitoring Activities:
- Function as part of a team performing routine monitoring activities to inform juvenile population estimates of endangered Chinook and steelhead populations within the Entiat River.
- Accurately collect and record biological (species identification, length, weight, tags, marks, scales, genetics, etc.) and environmental data (GPS waypoints, temperature, survey time, survey length, etc.).
Conduct creel surveys on lakes and streams to gather information on angler usage and harvest:
- Working extensively with the public to collect information on fisheries.
- Includes use of roving creel surveys, total and/or index counts, and interviewing individual anglers.
Sampling fish metrics:
- Identifying fish species, taking various measurements, checking for marks and tags (fin clips, floy, and/or pit tags), collecting snouts for analysis, taking scales and/or otoliths for age studies, and occasionally capturing fish by hook and line.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Setting, including hazards:
- Work at all hours in inclement weather; walking up to 6 miles on rugged uneven terrain in remote locations independently; lifting up to 75 pounds (5-gallon buckets of water and fish, and holding tanks).
- Use of standard chemicals for fish anesthesia (AQUI-S and MS-222) and sterilization chemicals (alcohol) is required.
- Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
- Schedule:
- Night, weekend, split, holiday, and on-call shifts will be required.
- Work in excess of 40 hours per week is occasionally required to complete field activities during peak season.
- Travel Requirements:
- Daily travel in WDFW issued vehicles, up to 2,500 miles per month.
- Tools and Equipment:
- Rotary screw traps, electrofishing equipment, PIT tagging equipment, pumps, generators, various hand tools, vehicles, boots, waders, electronic tag detectors, GPS, and computers.
- Customer Interactions:
- Extensive work with the public in conducting interviews and informing anglers of rules and regulations.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from high school or GED (including one year of high school science) and two (2) years of experience as a scientific technician 1.
- Graduation from high school or GED (including one year of high school science) and two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
- College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural science, or closely allied field will substitute year-for-year for experience, provided the course work includes at least 6 semesters or 9 quarter hours of natural science classes.
- Valid driver’s license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Science or other similar field of study.
- Familiarity and working knowledge of rotary smolt trap, electrofishing and mark-recapture methods, and study design.
- Ability to identify juvenile and adult salmonids.
- Familiarity with the life-history and populations of salmonids in the Upper Columbia Basin.
- Ability to apply PIT tags and familiarity with tagging software.
- Basic computer skills with emphasis on Microsoft Office software.
