The Position
The Bureau of Environmental Services is looking for an Invasive Species Technician to join the team!

The Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) is looking for an individual to support both the Biological Sciences Team in the Environmental Information Division and the Revegetation Team in the Watershed Operations and Management Division. This position performs work addressing and mitigating the impacts of invasive species on watershed health and water quality by supporting Early Detection and Rapid Response (ED/RR) efforts and assisting broader-scale invasive species policy and partner efforts.

Position Schedule:
Limited-Term with a maximum of 1400 hours per calendar year (25-40 hours per week)

Start Date:  May or as soon as possible

Preferred Qualifications

Please state in your resume or cover letter if you have the following desired qualifications (Please note, these are not required but will be helpful)

  • Ability to sight-identify common native and non-native plant species found in Portland
  • Knowledge of invasion theory, pathways of introduction, and best practices related to inventory, assessment and control of invasive species
  • Familiarity with a multi-taxa Early Detection and Rapid Response management inclusive of plant and animal species
  • Proficiency with data management and analysis
  • Technical writing, including project reports, literature reviews, and white papers
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS; field experience using Collector app
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to perform well in a range of public interaction situations and ability to work with private landowners to secure permissions and implement control measures
  • Proficiency using MS Office suite
  • Conversant in basic environmental statistics
  • Bachelor’s degree or currently enrolled and working towards a degree with course work in environmental science, botany, ecology, or similar disciplines

Work Location

Currently, many positions with the City of Portland are being performed remotely due to COVID-19.  In the future, current positions classified as “full-time remote” could: 1) remain full-time remote, 2) become a remote/onsite mix, 3) revert to full-time at a city work location. As the situation evolves, the exact work location of the position in this recruitment may change based upon leadership direction and approval.

To Qualify

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
 

  1. Knowledge of ecology and native and exotic plants of the Pacific NW
  2. Ability to demonstrate experience managing invasive species including inventory, assessment, and treatment
  3. Knowledge of  ArcGIS and Collector app
  4.  Ability to carry a backpack sprayer in dense foliage and on difficult terrain
  5. Possess, or be willing to earn, a pesticide application license from the State of Oregon
  6. Willingness to work in outdoors in a variety of weather conditions

Applicant must also:
 

  • Driver’s License and ability to drive city work vehicle or mileage-compensated personal vehicle to fieldwork sites
