 INVASIVE HERPETOFAUNA STRATEGIST
 FISH AND WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST 3 (BIO 3)

Olympia, Washington – Thurston County

As a senior-level biologist, lead efforts in natural resource assessment, conservation, and management by developing and implementing invasive herpetofauna management projects, focusing on assessments to control invasive herpetofauna species for the benefit of Washington’s Species of Greatest Conservation Need.  

Key responsibilities include coordinating invasive bullfrog control, interpreting and applying best scientific practices, staying current on research, and contributing to strategic planning and policy formulation.

Duties

 

Here is what you will be doing, 

Facilitate, coordinate, plan, and implement invasive herpetofauna species suppression projects to benefit Washington state listed species and species of greatest conservation need (SGCN):  

  • Develop invasive herpetofauna assessments, suppression, monitoring protocols, and control techniques/strategies.
  • Supervise, train, and outfit a team and/or manage contractors conducting invasive species control efforts (may also assist with implementation).
  • Collaborates with the WDFW veterinarian, species leads, and regional staff to develop and implement procedures and protocols for euthanasia and control of invasive herpetofauna.
  • Seek funding and manage grants and contracts for project implementation with other staff, facilitate and participate in on the ground conservation and recovery actions.
  • Develop near term action plans and prioritize, communicate, and track implementation.

 

Produce and curate agency documents in agency systems: 

  • Develop whitepapers, including data and information syntheses, that can guide future efforts, document lessons learned, and inform best practices.

Provide technical guidance and participate in invasive herpetofauna rule assessment and implementation, including outreach to and with staff and the public:

  • Maintain familiarity with emerging research, data, products, and information for invasive herpetofauna management with emphasis on bullfrogs.
  • Champion and disseminate best available science as an active and collaborative information conduit.
  • Provide technical expertise for policy and management decisions.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Work is primarily performed in an office environment. 
    • Regular outdoor/field work during species and habitat specific field seasons. 
    • Navigate on foot to, from and within remote environments, over rough terrain, for long days (8 – 12 hours) and several days in a row, in highly variable weather conditions, conducting surveys and other related tasks. 
    • Occasionally move, carry, or unload up to 50 pounds of field equipment.
    • This work involves killing large numbers of non-native amphibians (and potentially reptiles). Euthanasia/humane killing methods will be used when possible.
    • Office hazards include working under fluorescent light, repetitively entering data into computer, and looking at computer monitor for long periods of time.
  • Schedule:
    • Will schedule their time within a typical 40-hour work week. Typically, Monday – Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. 
    • Incumbent is expected to adjust schedule and work additional hours as needed to meet business demands and deadlines, in partnership with supervisor for support, prioritization and reasonable adjustments.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Periodic statewide or regional travel and occasional attendance at evening meetings is required. 
    • Extended travel or overnight travel may occur.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Standard office equipment, field equipment, vehicles, computers, tablets, and GPS.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Frequent effective information delivery for and negotiation with the public, local landowners, project partners, local government officials, and special interest groups (conservation, agriculture, land use, forestry).

 

 

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, natural resources science such as wildlife biology, zoology, wildlife ecology, landscape ecology.

AND


  • Three (3) years of professional experience in wildlife conservation, management, or research related to species expertise OR habitat conservation, management, or research related to species expertise

OR 

  • Two (2) years as a Fish & Wildlife Biologist 2 related to species expertise.  

Please Note: 

  • Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.
  • Master’s degree in the applicable science will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.
  • Ph.D. in the applicable science will substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: 

  • Safely operating motor vehicles
  • Effectively organizing multiple assignments, sometimes of a complex nature or involving competing priorities, to produce work products that are accurate, thorough, and on time.

Knowledge of:

  • Ecology and biology, species distributions, habitat associations, and methods for control of invasive herpetofauna of Washington with a special emphasis on bullfrogs.
  • Ecology and biology, species distributions, and habitat associations of rare vertebrate species of Washington. 
  • Population biology, wildlife habitat and ecological systems associations, conservation biology.
  • Wildlife survey, monitoring, and research techniques.
  • Grant, contract, and project management.
  • Data management, statistical analysis, spatial data analysis, information synthesis and delivery.
  • Resource management agencies missions, approaches, and means of cooperating/collaborating.
  • Conservation planning, endangered species recovery and management, game species management.

 

Ability to:

  • Effectively communicate with agency representatives, colleagues, and the public to gain assistance and cooperation with Department conservation planning and species recovery programs.
  • Conduct effective oral presentations at agency meetings and public meetings.
  • Write, edit, and publish professional documents and reports.
  • Cooperate and participate with conservation planning teams.
  • Lead and coordinate efforts of teams in conservation and management projects.
  • Prepare and oversee implementation of invasive herpetofauna species control projects.
  • Produce basic GIS products.
  • Manage grants, contracts, budgets, and projects.
