Location: Natural Resources Building- Olympia, WA

Salary: $3,317.00 – $4,410.00 Monthly 

Hybrid and remote work options are not available for this position. The position is required to be on-site during work hours at the Natural Resources Building from Monday – Friday, due to the front desk responsibilities of the role.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Internal Communications program. The Internal Communications Specialist position reports to the Assistant Director of Internal Communications, offering key support to agency internal communications initiatives. This position will collect, compile, edit, and share information from groups throughout the agency to meet internal communications objectives and advance employee awareness of agency news, goals, and values. In addition, this position serves as the daily backup Natural Resources Building (NRB) Access Coordinator to provide uninterrupted coverage during the NRB’s hours of public access, at the NRB rotunda front desk.  

 

 

 

Duties

Responsibilities:
Support Agency Internal Communications:

  • Determine how to share news about programs, policies, and services; select methods and techniques of disseminating information, utilizing inclusive and accessible standards; and evaluate the effectiveness of internal communications initiatives.
  • Collaborate with work groups throughout the agency to identify and gather information that needs to be shared.
  • Once information is gathered, the position will write, edit, layout, and proofread materials for newsletters, email, intranet content, and announcements.
  • Research and collaborate with diversity, equity, and inclusion subject matter experts to utilize best practices in communications.
  • Create a process for continuous evaluation and reporting of internal communications practices, such as surveys, listening sessions, and data collection.
  • Maintain relations with divisions, regions, and offices to exchange information, promote agency programs and initiatives, and tell the agency’s news.
Serve as the backup NRB Access Coordinator:
  • Coordinate visitor, vendor, and staff sign-in, access to the NRB, and sign-out.
  • Respond to general inquiries from the public and specific inquiries about security procedures from state employees in person, via email, and by phone.
  • Answer the NRB Reception Desk Main Phone Line and/or other phone lines assigned.
  • When the NRB Coordinator is on leave this position will maintain an accurate daily log of visitors, vendors, and staff for security purposes.

 

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 6 months of education or experience with writing, design, and content creation.
  • Experience contributing to a publication, such as developing and editing copy, factsheets, web content, and newsletters, social media posts, or blogs.
  • Fluency in the digital space, including using content management systems.
  • Experience working on a team, engaging with others using empathy and compassion, using healthy conflict resolution and communication.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.
  • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.
  • Writing and editing skills and capable of handling a variety of communication tasks.
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft products.
  • Skilled in developing a creative strategy and changing course if necessary.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • The position’s assigned duty station is the Natural Resources Building in Olympia. Work is performed almost exclusively (95%) indoors in office environments. When acting as backup for NRB Access Coordinator, will be seated in NRB rotunda.
  • The position requires periodic (5%) travel for meetings, trainings, outreach, and networking; travel may be to DNR events, region offices, and work centers in remote locations throughout the state to gather promotional information on events and initiatives.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working in customer service.
  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, communications, public relations, or related field of study, or a combination of education and/or equivalent experience.
