Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen
Do you want to be involved in protecting Puget Sound? Our Water Quality Program in our office near Seattle, WA is looking for two team members to help industrial facilities meet water quality requirements in order to reduce toxic contaminants in the southern resident orca’s food web.

This position will be located in our Northwest Regional Office (NWRO) in Shoreline, WA.

The mission of the Water Quality Program is to protect and restore Washington’s waters to support healthy watersheds and communities. Our work ensures state waters can support beneficial uses including recreational and business activities, supplies for clean drinking water, and the protection of fish, shellfish, wildlife, and public health.

During Healthy Washington Roadmap to Recovery, employees are working a combination of in-office, in the field, and/or telework based on position and business need. This position is expected to work in the office up to two days a week. Ecology is maintaining less than maximum building occupancy, and requiring masks, health screening questions before entry, and social distancing.


Please Note: 
The salary posted above does not include the additional 5% premium pay that this position will receive due to this position’s location in King County.

Duties

What you’ll do:

  • Conduct compliance inspections of permitted and unpermitted industrial facilities throughout the northwest region, and prepare and issue inspection reports.
  • Provide technical assistance to help facilities come into compliance with their permit.
  • Evaluate water quality monitoring data and annual reports.
  • Review Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans.
  • Respond to and investigate water quality complaints, and prepare recommendations for enforcement actions.

You will work on a team committed to protecting our treasured southern resident orcas by working to reduce toxic contaminants to their food web.

Our team is made up of stormwater inspectors, contaminated site specialists, compliance expertise, and stormwater program planners as part of the Compliance and Technical Assistance Unit.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational, volunteer, internship, and lived-experience. See below for how you may qualify.

Option 1:

Six (6) years of education and/ or experience:

  • Education: involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field.
  • Experience: in environmental analysis or control or environmental planning.
Experience may include:
  • Investigating environmental complaints or violations
  • Performing inspections or field investigations
  • Recommending compliance or enforcement options
  • Assisting businesses with regulatory requirements, including explaining options for coming into compliance
  • Conducting scientific studies or environmental data analysis

Option 2: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field.
  • Two (2) years of experience in environmental analysis or control or environmental planning.
Experience may include:
  • Investigating environmental complaints or violations
  • Performing inspections or field investigations
  • Recommending compliance or enforcement options
  • Assisting businesses with regulatory requirements, including explaining options for coming into compliance
  • Conducting scientific studies or environmental data analysis

Option 3:

  • A Master’s degree involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field.
  • One (1) year of experience in environmental analysis or control or environmental planning.
Experience may include:
  • Investigating environmental complaints or violations
  • Performing inspections or field investigations
  • Recommending compliance or enforcement options
  • Assisting businesses with regulatory requirements, including explaining options for coming into compliance
  • Conducting scientific studies or environmental data analysis

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
