The Solid Waste Management (SWM) program is looking to fill an Industrial Section Environmental Specialist (Environmental Specialist 1) position. This position is located in our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

In this rare entry-level position, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the environmental field and start your professional career with Ecology. You will assist engineers and other staff in the Industrial Section with various tasks related to the permits that we issue. While this position is located within the Solid Waste Management Program, the Industrial Section implements the air quality, water quality, dangerous waste, and cleanup activities at some of the largest industries throughout the state.

Program Mission: The mission of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) program is to reduce wastes through prevention and reuse, keep toxics out of the environment, and safely manage what remains. The Industrial Section regulates some of the largest and most complex industries in the state and minimizes their impact on the air, land and water by issuing and ensuring compliance with air, water, solid and dangerous waste permits and air, water, solid waste, hazardous waste, and toxics cleanup rules and regulations.

Tele-work options for this position: This position will be eligible for up to a 40% telework schedule and is expected to work in the office three days per week. Duties
The Industrial Section is unique in that we implement the air quality, water quality, dangerous waste, and cleanup activities for our assigned facilities. Additionally, each of these different areas have an associated database where we document our important work.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to begin learning about all of our various work tasks as well as assist with our public outreach activities and assist the section in our continuous efforts to improve the accessibility of our documents.

What you will do:

  • Assist with data entry into the section’s various databases.
  • Manage and reorganize our paper files on a continual basis, including assisting with public records requests. 
  • Serve as one of the document accessibility super users for the section.  
  • Assist the section’s engineers with air quality, water quality, and dangerous waste inspections.
  • Assist the section’s public outreach coordinator with preparing and sharing permitting documents for public comment periods.
  • Serve as one of the section’s SharePoint site owners.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.

A total of Four (4) years of experience and/or education as described below:

  • Professional level Experience in environmental analysis or control or environmental planning. 
  • Education: involving a major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field.

Combination 1 No college credit hours or degree. 4 years of experience.
Combination 2 30-59 semester or 45-89 quarter credits. 3 years of experience.
Combination 3 60-89 semester or 90-134 quarter credits (AA degree). 2 years of experience.
Combination 4 90-119 semester or 135-179 quarter credits. 1 year of experience.
Combination 5  A Bachelor’s Degree or higher. 0 years of experience.
