The work associated with this position will primarily be performed onsite; this is not a telework position. Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. WORK SCHEDULE: This position currently works a 4 x 10 schedule. The treatment plants are operated 24 / 7. Applicants must be available to work any assigned schedule. This position is overtime eligible.

Job Duties

JOB SUMMARY: The responsibilities of this classification include applying entry-level knowledge of mechanical techniques and principles and assisting journey-level mechanics in performing the maintenance, repair and overhaul of a variety of complex mechanical machinery at wastewater treatment plant facilities.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Assist journey-level workers in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of a variety of complex mechanical machinery including pumps, motors, grinders, blowers and compressors, centrifuges, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, and gravity belt thickener.
  • Assist in the repair, maintenance and installation of large plumbing systems used in a wastewater treatment facility.
  • Assist in repair, design or fabrication of plant piping and other heavy equipment using welding equipment, cutting torches and plasma cutters.
  • Operate a variety of hand, power and pneumatic tools including grinders, drill motors, drill presses, band saws, ironworkers, table saws and hydraulic presses.
  • Assist in the use of overhead cranes, forklifts and hoists; remove and install industrial machinery using overhead cranes.
  • Assist in the planning of heavy equipment repairs using schematic drawings, engineering and computer drawings, operations and maintenance manuals. Use vendor data and catalogs to order parts, repair equipment and make modifications.
  • Operate a variety of machine shop equipment including mills, lathes and radial drills to fabricate sleeves, shafts, bushings, cutters and other parts under the direction of the journey-level worker.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
  • Knowledge of the use, care and safe operation of basic power and hand tools
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing techniques and principles
  • Basic knowledge of welding techniques and principles and demonstrated skill in flat position welding
  • Basic knowledge of pumps (normal operation, motor components) and types of pumps
  • Basic knowledge of packing, bearings, and seals
  • Basic knowledge of using machinist measuring tools
  • Basic knowledge of rigging and overhead crane use.
  • Skill in oral and written communication techniques and principles and ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions
  • Demonstrated skill in working with mechanical systems
  • Basic Knowledge of machine shop tool operation and equipment I.E. lathes, milling machines, band saws, radial drills and hydraulic presses

The most competitive candidates will also have the following:

  • Knowledge of reading schematic drawings; Knowledge of free body diagrams
  • Basic knowledge of math principles and techniques
  • Knowledge of scientific principles and techniques including knowledge of chemical reactions to materials and equipment
  • Knowledge of carpentry techniques and principles to build supports for equipment repair and overhauls
  • Skill in working with a diverse group of individuals in varying occupations
  • Skill in working in a team environment
  • Basic skill in using a computer and associated software
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques and principles

Licensing, Certification and Other Requirements

  • Washington State Driver’s License
  • CDL – highly desired
  • CPR and first aid certification – highly desired

WORKING CONDITIONS: The position requires the ability to work all shift schedules and required to report to work during adverse and inclement weather conditions. Incumbents perform fieldwork at a wastewater treatment plant and associated facilities and are required to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, work in confined spaces, climb in and out of tanks using ladders, and work around noxious odors and high noise levels
