HABITAT PROGRAM MANAGER 

Sound Salmon Solutions (SSS) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that was founded in 1990. SSS serves as the Regional Fisheries Enhancement Group (RFEG) for the Stillaguamish, Snohomish, and Island County watersheds in Washington State. POSITION SUMMARY

The Habitat Program Manager develops, manages, and coordinates the implementation of habitat restoration projects and contract work independently and collaboratively with staff members, project partners and landowners. This position also manages the organization’s Habitat Restoration Crew, consisting of a crew lead and several crew members.

This position is primarily office based with occasional outdoor work including invasive vegetation control, planting, and meeting with landowners and project partners. The office is located in Mukilteo, Washington.

The Habitat Program Manager should be comfortable working outdoors and walking on uneven terrain in a variety of weather conditions. This is a full-time, non-exempt position with an annual wage of $52,000 – $60,000 DOE. JOB TASKS

Project Management

  • Secures and develops projects in conjunction with staff members, project partners, and landowners. Projects may include invasive plant removal, native revegetation, in-stream restoration, erosion control, and site stewardship.
  • Coordinates and schedules field work for the Habitat Restoration Crew.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with landowners and project partners.
  • Ensures all projects meet quality and quantity expectations within the budget and timeline agreed upon.
  • Manages the purchasing of materials and invoicing for field projects.

Supervision

  • Establishes clear goals and objectives with the Habitat Restoration Crew including the quality and quantity of work, timeline, and safety standards.
  • Enforces organizational policies and procedures of Sound Salmon Solutions and ensures adherence to programmatic goals and mission.
  • Leads by example, occasionally working with and alongside the Habitat Restoration Crew.
  • Councils and motivates the Habitat Restoration Crew when needed.

Logistics

  • Plans and implements training for in-field staff and volunteers such as project orientation, proper use of tools and equipment, workplace safety, restoration ecology, best management practices in restoration techniques, natural resource management, leadership and management skills, and stewardship.
  • Manage and maintain field infrastructure including vehicles, tools, power equipment, herbicide equipment, and storage facilities in coordination with the Habitat Restoration Crew.

Communication

  • Prepares oral and written reports including project summaries, equipment use and maintenance logs, performance evaluations, and incident reports.
  • Communicates with Grant Administrators and provides project summaries, reports, and requested information.
  • Prepares and submits maps and photo documentation of projects when required.
  • Maintains project files including documentation of work, receipts, and contract compliance.
  • Represents the organization at local watershed and salmon recovery forums.

QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • A college degree in natural resource management, environmental science, restoration ecology, or a related field.
  • In-field riparian, estuarine, and/or shoreline restoration experience, preferably in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Knowledge of best management practice and techniques related to native plant installation and control of invasive vegetation.
  • Grant writing experience.
  • Ability to track and manage projects successfully including those that are technically, logistically, or financially complex.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an office and field setting.
  • Experience supervising and training field-based staff. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and approachable personality.
  • Experience working with landowners, tribes, government and non-governmental agencies, and other individuals with varying backgrounds and perspectives.
  • High level of initiative, creative problem solver, and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of mapping equipment and programs.
  • Current WSDA pesticide operator’s license with an aquatic endorsement and willingness to become the organizational applicator.
  • Ability to pass Washington State background check to work with youth and adult volunteers.
  • Valid driver’s license, vehicle insurance, and dependable transportation.
