Responsibilities

  • Prepare project work plans for timber stand improvement (TSI), and reforestation activities.
  • Conduct reforestation and stocking surveys of recently planted tracts using standard methods and techniques.
  • Perform reforestation and stocking surveys to determine reforestation and timber stand improvement needs.
  • Perform surveys to determine stand conditions and the need for precommercial thinning or other treatment.
  • Determine pre-commercial thinning, plantation conditions, and health status of forest plots.
  • Perform reconnaissance and locate timber sale area boundaries in accordance with appropriate National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation.
  • Inspect silvicultural contract work (e.g., genetic tree improvement, planting, thinning, seeding, site preparation) for compliance with contracts.
  • Conduct on-site observation of contractor or agency crews engaged in timber stand improvement or reforestation efforts.
  • Mark, grade, and cruise timber in areas involving only a few silvicultural practices, but with some variation in forest types and composition.
  • Make recommendations for areas requiring remedial action based on results of reforestation and stocking surveys.
  • Serve as Contracting Officer Representative (COR) or inspector on reforestation, timber stand improvement, planting or timber marking contracts.
  • Ensure all provisions are enforced and proper measures are taken to protect and enhance resource values
  • Check for compliance on corrective actions identified during inspections and recommend final acceptance of contracts upon completion
  • Traverse project areas to determine acreage and draft maps of traverse areas in preparation for timber stand improvement and reforestation activities.
  • Determine the survival rate of seedlings by collecting data using established procedures and precedents.
  • Correct minor problems in direct contact with COR.
  • Collect basic silvicultural data needed to inventory stands and prescribe stand treatment based on field analysis.
  • Plan inspections of silvicultural work such as genetic tree improvement, planting, thinning, seeding, and site preparation.
  • Assist in preparation of recurring reports associated with the unit TSI and reforestation program
  • Determine the need for site preparation and plantation conditions following standard work plans.
