The Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest (MBS) in Region 6 will soon be hiring two GS-5 Timber Sale Prep Forestry Technicians. This is a full-time seasonal position with the duty station in North Bend, Washington. This season is tentatively expected to last from May or June through November 2022. The position is primarily intended to serve the Snoqualmie and Skykomish Ranger Districts, although duties may be assigned on other ranger districts of the MBS. Government housing may be available.

About the Position:

This position is responsible for implementing timber sale preparation activities on the South Zone of the Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. This position is primarily field going, often working alone and in a team setting.

Work often includes: 

  • Marking unit boundaries 
  • Determining harvest unit acreages using GPS and hand traversing 
  • Assisting foresters with unit layout, including as logging systems analysis, resource buffering, road layout, need for treatment, and more 
  • Measuring stand exam plots 
  • Assisting with timber cruising 
  • Assisting with a variety of other work, such as GIS data management and map-making, precommercial thinning projects, fire projects, and more

The Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest extends 140 miles along the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains from the Canadian border to Mt. Rainer National Park. The Forest covers portions of Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, King and Pierce Counties. Together, these counties contain over 55 percent of the state’s total population. Nearly five million people live in or near the Puget Sound metropolitan area. Another two million people live in southwest British Columbia and make frequent use of the Forest. This coupled with the fact that four major mountain passes cross the Cascades through the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, makes this one of the most visited National Forests in the country.

About the Community – North Bend has a population of 6,300 and is a small town located off of Interstate 90 nestled in the western foothills of the Cascade Mountains. North Bend is about a 30 minute drive from downtown Seattle. The region is probably best known for its recreation opportunities, including Mt. Rainier National Park, Snoqualmie Pass Ski Area, and Alpine Lakes Wilderness and numerous opportunities for back country hiking and camping.
