Responsibilities

  • Serves as an Assistant Engine Captain on an Engine Module crew performing wildland firefighting work and providing supervision of crewmembers in fire engine operations.
  • Performs work directly related to wildland fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction, and prescribed burning.
  • Makes initial evaluation of fire situations, determines rate of spread, potential hazards to property and other improvements, suppression method to use, hose lays, deployment of crew, point of initial attack, type of tools to use and application of water.
  • Performs vehicle inspection on fire vehicles from utility trucks and fire engines. Inventories fire tools and equipment to ensure necessary tools and equipment are available for firefighting tasks.
  • Operates a variety of motor vehicles to transport equipment, supplies, crew members, etc.

These are Career-Seasonal positions and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. While in pay status incumbent will work a full-time (40 hours per week). Work schedule and periods of non-pay status are contingent upon funding and operational needs. The typical season is from February through October. **NOTE** position at Yosemite National Park is a full-time, year round appointment and not career-seasonal.
