As a part of the Webster Forest Nursery team, this position delivers quality assurance to produce 8-15 million forest seedlings annually. The work is centered between agricultural and production systems, with the goal of providing quality forest seedlings to DNR foresters and to the public. During the winter and spring months, peak workload requires the Forest Nursery Lead to demonstrate both dependability and a strong work ethic; every team member is essential in the fast-paced environment of harvest, sorting, packaging, and shipping hundreds of thousands of seedlings daily. This position is responsible for quality control during seedling packing, overseeing the work of contract staff, greenhouse seedling production, quality control during field transplanting, and various other agricultural duties for the care of seedlings. Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors in inclement weather.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Horticulture/Agriculture/Biology knowledge from college-level coursework and/or previous work experience in the natural sciences.
  • English language proficiency. Strong communication skills, both verbal and in writing.
  • Need to have reliable and punctual work attendance.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • Work in the packing shed, greenhouses, and outdoors in all weather conditions, from the cold and rain to the dust and hot sun. Frequent temperature changes walking into and out of coolers, freezers, production areas, and outdoors in all weather conditions. During seedling packing indoor conditions are dusty, muddy, humid, wet, and cold. Must be able to stand for extended periods during an 8-hour shift. Ability to walk on uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Frequent lifting of bareroot seedlings, seedling bags, boxes, and other supplies requires the ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs. without the aid of equipment. Working in and around large warehouses and farming equipment requires the ability to effectively communicate in a loud industrial setting.
  • Packing schedule (Dec–Apr): 0800-1630; Transplant (Apr–Jun): 0700-1530.
  • Some travel may be required, but notice will be given.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Spanish language skills.
  • Forklift operation experience.
  • Pesticide Applicators License.
  • Previous use of mobile devices to collect and store data.
  • Working knowledge of Horticulture, Agriculture, or Seedling Forestry through previous work experience.
