Salary– $54,492.00 – $73,260.00 Annually

Responsibilities:
In this position, you will manage several large contracts involving:

  1. Installation of forest inventory plots on a systematic grid across DNR-managed lands in both eastern and western WA. These plots are coupled with remote-sensing data to train and construct DNR’s corporate remotely-sensed forest inventory;
  2. GIS delineation of planning units across a subset of DNR-managed lands (nearly 1.2 million acres in western Washington);
  3. An intensive, traditional plot-based forest inventory conducted within those delineated planning units.

As the Operations Manager you will be in charge of contract compliance and quality control/quality assurance of the work being done, and will supervise DNR forest inventory field staff.
In the office:

  • You will conduct quality control on the delineated planning units by means of GIS and other software.
  • Maintain communication with contractors, team members and other DNR staff that will be involved in different aspects of the contract’s lifespan.
  • Keep track of the contract’s timeline and make sure contractors are hitting deliverable targets.
  • Collect invoices and coordinate payments for contract deliverables.
  • Identify other potential contracting needs.
  • Delegate check-cruising responsibilities to inventory foresters.

In the field:

  • You will conduct check-cruises as necessary.
  • Assist field staff with sampling issues with equipment or collection techniques.
  • Meet contractors or field staff on-site, if the need arises.
  • Meet in-person with DNR region staff, if the need arises

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree with a focus in forestry or other related natural resources field.
    OR equivalent education and experience in forestry or a similar natural resources field.
  • At least 2 years of experience working in forestry or a related field including environmental sampling (e.g.,regeneration surveys, timber cruising).
  • At least 1 year of experience with GIS software (ArcGIS or similar).
  • At least 1 year of experience working with computerized systems for field data collection including field computers and GPS receivers.
  • Commitment to professionalism.
  • Knowledge of Pacific Northwest ecosystems including identification of common tree and plant species and their habitats.

Conditions of Employment:

  • A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
  •  70% office and 30% field-based. Outdoor navigation and hiking off-trail over rough terrain under harsh outdoor conditions.
  • The incumbent in this position is required to travel. Safe driving on unimproved roads with limited signage. Travel to remote field sites throughout the state. Multiple days in a row in travel status staying at hotels.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Contract compliance work experience.
  • Experience using survey-grade GPS and processing coordinates obtained with this technology.
  • R and/or SQL programming experience.
  • Chainsaw use experience, particularly bucking downed logs.
  • CPR, First Aid, Wilderness Safety certification(s).
