Fish Program – Fish Management Division

These positions provide technical assistance to the Northern Pike Monitoring and Suppression Project, Joint Stock Assessment Project (JSAP), and the Lake Roosevelt Evaluation Project (LREP.

 

Providing key support to project lead biologists, the Scientific Technician 2 engages in cooperative aquatic invasive species suppression, and fish stock assessment projects in Region 1.

Duties

 

Here is some of what you will be doing:

  • Conducts gill net surveys associated with suppression activities of invasive fish species in Region 1. 
  • Collects and records biological data on fish including species identification, total length, fork length, weight, sex and maturity.
  • Euthanizes non-native species to support suppression activities.
  • Maintains and repairs fish sampling equipment including but not limited to gill nets, dip nets, anchors, ropes, electronic balances, PIT tag readers, and GPS units.
  • Compiles field data and enters data into computer using Microsoft Office programs (EXCEL, Word) and conducts quality assurance/quality control to ensure data is free of errors and ready for analysis.

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Work is primarily conducted in field and warehouse settings and involves many hours of vehicle travel. 
    • Field work is conducted during inclement weather (including extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, snow, ice, and working in cold water for long periods of time). 
    • Field work is primarily conducted on a boat for long hours on large bodies of water. 
    • Boat conditions include slippery, wet, uneven surfaces and wavy conditions. 
    • Requires repetitive heavy lifting associated with setting and pulling gill nets (up to 50 lbs.). 
    • Potential injuries including cuts, scrapes, bruises, muscle strains and other injuries associated with the physical nature of field activities.   
    • Requires repetitive lifting and carrying equipment weighing 75 pounds or more for short distances. 
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
    • Work may be conducted in an office setting occasionally and require working on a computer and looking at a monitor for long hours.
  • Schedule:
    • Generally, 40 hours/ week, Monday – Friday (extensive overtime is likely).  
    • May require working more than 8 hours per day on a boat in a team setting. 
    • Work is conducted primarily during the day but some activities may extend into the evening on occasion.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Requires extensive travel times within the workday.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Boats, manual hand tools, electronic balances, handheld PIT tag readers, handheld GPS, net repair tools, fish picks, knives. 
    • Personal protective equipment are generally worn throughout the day including, Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs), rain gear, waders, boots, gloves, ear protection, and eye protection.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • May Interact with the public at boat ramps and on the water.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED including 1 year of high school science, and two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

Or

  • Graduation from high school or GED including 1 year of high school science, and two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

Please note:

  • College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

License:

  • Valid driver’s license.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft is dependent on supervisory direction, position need, and training availability.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

Experience conducting gill net surveys:

  • Proficient in identification of eastern Washington fish species
  • Familiar with deploying and retrieving gill nets.
  • Conduct suppression activities including handling large numbers of fish in various states of disposition and euthanizing invasive fish species.

 

Desired training: 

  • First Aid / CPR training 
  • Motorboat Operators Certification Course (MOCC)
  • Washington Boater Safety Training (or equivalent)
