Our Climate Change Research Scientist, 

  • Assembles and reviews existing scientific literature related to the effects of climate change on fish and wildlife and their habitat in Washington State. 
  • Develops guidance and action steps that can be used by local governments to identify, protect, and improve resiliency of natural areas and species supported on those areas from the impacts of climate change, and identify and protect species connectivity corridors.
  • Develops a science document(s) that describes how climate resilience practices can benefit ecosystem function generally and salmon recovery efforts specifically.
  • Reviews, synthesizes, and summarizes findings from literature, modeling data, and other sources of information as necessary to inform the climate guidance. 
  • Prepares for, attends, and actively participates in inter-agency meetings in order to ensure that science guidance maximizes considerations of the state’s fish and wildlife and their habitats.
  • Develops and delivers timely report outs on inter-agency meeting results.
  • Provides input to and other assistance with planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating activities, and management recommendations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:    
    1. Work is performed in a typical office setting, home-based for the foreseeable future.
  • Schedule:   
    1. Typically, work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm –flexible schedule options available after completion of probation/trial service period.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. There will be telework – possible occasional travel to regional offices to meet with staff, and infrequent travel with jurisdiction staff.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Standard desktop or laptop computer workstation.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Regular interaction with Regional Habitat Program staff; city and/or county planning staff/directors; other state agency staff.
    2. Occasional communication with Local elected officials; tribal natural resources staff.
  • Other:
  1. On-going collaboration with the Climate Impacts Group at the University of Washington and the Northwest Climate Adaptation Science Center.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science or equivalent. 

AND 

  • Four (4) years of experience in natural resources management within a local government, environmental or conservation organization, consulting firm, or state or federal natural resources agency.

AND 

  • Four (4) years of professional experience designing statistical or mathematical research in population biology or population management or designing and conducting wildlife, habitat, or fish-related research studies, in addition to two articles published or in press refereed literature, (one article must be as senior author, the second article must be as senior or secondary author).

OR

  • Equivalent professional experience may substitute year for year for education requirement if that experience is in natural resources management work within a local government, environmental or conservation organization, consulting firm, or state or federal natural resources agency, or closely allied field AND experience designing statistical or mathematical research in population biology or population management or designing and conducting wildlife, habitat, or fish-related research studies, in addition to two articles published or in press refereed literature, (one article must be as senior author, the second article must be as senior or secondary author). 

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Job knowledge and experience with:

  • Basic GIS. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Master’s or PhD degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or equivalent. 

AND 

  • Two (2) years of professional experience designing statistical or mathematical research in population biology or population management or designing and conducting wildlife, habitat, or fish-related research studies, in addition to two articles published or in press refereed literature, (one article must be as senior author, the second article must be as senior or secondary author).

Job knowledge and experience with:

  • Climate adaptation principles and practices.
  • Monitoring and adaptive management principles and current practices.
  • Washington state’s Growth Management Act (GMA).
  • Washington state’s salmon recovery objectives and/or Puget Sound recovery objectives.
