Salary– $3,401.00 – $4,425.00 Monthly

Our EGC Biologist,

  • Supervises the Scientific Technician 2s in assessments throughout marine waters of Washington.
  • Under direct supervision determines techniques and procedures, and/or performs field investigations or research projects, and assists in preparing management/research reports or proposals based on those activities.
  • Conducts land-based and/or boat-based trapping assessments throughout coastal intertidal and subtidal habitats following predetermined protocols to determine the distribution and abundance of EGC.
  • Conducts control/removal trapping efforts to functionally eradicate EGC following directives from lead biologists.
  • Coordinates with agency partners, tribal co-managers, and other entities (i.e. Washington Sea Grant, Northwest Straits Commission, Lummi Nation, Shoalwater Bay Tribe, Pacific County, etc.), conducting EGC work.
  • Trains staff to properly conduct EGC monitoring using established protocols.
  • May operate motorized (i.e. airboats, <26’ aluminum boats, rigid inflatables, etc.) and non-motorized (i.e. kayaks, inflatables, canoes) watercrafts in coastal marine environments depending on experience.
  • May work in and around watercrafts performing trapping strategies predetermined for subtidal efforts; incumbents may deploy various traps (i.e. shrimp, minnow, Fukui) from watercrafts, record location and return the following day to retrieve the traps manually or via a pot puller and remove and record any crabs and/or bycatch; this process may be repeated for up to 5 days at a time.
  • Participates in EGC taskforce meetings providing regional expertise, advice and support under direct supervision.
  • Participates in the EGC technical working groups to develop management plans under direct supervision.
  • Summarizes data, drafts summaries, prepares reports or report segments.
  • Assists in the review and/or development of mitigation plans.
  • Conducts quality control and quality assurance on all data collected.
  • Obtains permission to work on private and public property.
  • Supervises Scientific Technician 2s conducting EGC field efforts.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Approximately 80% field and 20% office.
    2. EGC monitoring is physically demanding, hiking 2 to 3 miles per day and carrying up to a 50-pound dry bag or frame pack throughout Washington’s vast marine environments, including but not limited to, intertidal habitats such as marshes, channels, and mudflats.
    3. Potential hazards include uneven terrain, stinging vegetation and insects, biting and pinching animals, and possible encounters with wildlife.
    4. Usually part of a team, sometimes working independently, in remote locations (following strict call in and out procedures), during inclement weather, day and night.
    5. May operate motorize (i.e. airboats, <26’ aluminum boats, rigid inflatables) and non-motorized (i.e. kayaks, inflatables, canoes) watercrafts depending on experience.
    6. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    1. Workweek will typically be the first 40 hours of work per week (24/7).
    2. May be required to occasionally exceed these hours, work outside of normal workweek during holidays and weekends, and respond on short notice to rapid response AIS emergencies.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. This position requires frequent statewide travel and overnight stays up to five days at times.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Desktops, laptops, smart phones, electronic tablets, electronic software forms, PFDs, and field gear (i.e. hip boots, xtratuffs, raingear, dry bag, frame pack).
    2. Complex mobile water quality laboratory, eDNA, and non-electronic biological and environmental sampling devices.
    3. 25 foot-cargo trailer, watercrafts, flatbed trailer, winches, motor vehicles, and complex hot water trailered and hand-pushed pressure washers.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Interacts with the public on a regular basis while conducting fieldwork.
    2. Occasionally confronted by citizens that are non-compliant or not cooperative.
    3. Coordinates regularly with tribal co-managers and works on tribal lands.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, environmental science, or a related field.  

License:

  • Valid driver’s license.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A Master’s Degree, or a higher-level degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science or a related field.

Experience:

  • Three (3) years of experience in a natural resources-related field.
  • One (1) year of experience in the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) field.
  • One (1) year of experience managing and monitoring European green crab populations.
  • Preparing comprehensive written reports.
  • With database construction, management, and routine analysis functions
  • Managing a heavy workload effectively.
  • Operating and/or working in and around boats, trailers, etc.
  • Towing/trailering boats and/or trailers (i.e. cargo trailers, trailered decontamination units).
  • Preparing comprehensive written reports.
  • Using handheld data collection devices (i.e. smartphones, iPads, etc.) in the field and entering data using platforms such as iForms or Survey 123.
  • With MS Office (i.e. Access, Teams, Excel, PowerApps).
  • With ESRI products and any other online mapping tools.

Ability to:

  • ID invasive and native crab species.
  • Identify species using a taxonomic key or field guide.
  • Humanely euthanize invasive species.

Familiarity:

  • With aquatic invasive species management principles and procedures.
  • With and able to develop, implement, and manage statewide biological studies and management actions.

Certification/License:

  • WA State Boater Education Card or equivalent.
  • MOCC Certification.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED Certified.
  • Watercraft Inspection Training (WIT) Levels I/II.
