Our Fish & Wildlife Area Manager,

Develops and implements activities to maintain and improve habitat, species, and/or recreational opportunities compatible with fish and wildlife and their habitats.

Tasks include:

  • Developing projects to meet habitat management, species management and/or recreation management needs.    
  • Planning, coordinating, designing, implementing and monitoring habitat enhancement, species maintenance, and recreation management projects.  
  • Implementing projects and directing staff to implement projects and/or contracts that needs to be completed.  
  • Ensuring broad-based input into project development by engaging and seeking input from District Team (DT) and Wildlife Area Advisory Committee (WAAC).

Oversees and coordinates the planning and implementation of habitat enhancement and maintenance projects on the wildlife area to benefit fish and wildlife recreation or operations. 

Tasks include:

  • Taking part or leading cross program processes to assure that projects are appropriate for the land and address concerns of all interests.  
  • Coordinating with outside organizations and other agency programs proposing projects.  
  • Preparing and writing agricultural and grazing permits and completing required processes to document compatibility and address any concerns.

Develops and writes wildlife area plans and plan updates that guide habitat, wildlife, and recreation management.

Tasks include:

  • Drafting plan updates, developing projects, scheduling and facilitating meetings, presenting information to WAAC, DT and other user groups, and coordinating with staff to develop work plans.  
  • Maintaining a WAAC that represents a balanced set of resources and recreation interests.

Prepares budgets for multiple funding sources, completes reports as required, and manages/monitors budgets. 

 Tasks Include:

  • Developing budgets in coordination with regional and headquarters staff and entering budget allotments into CAPS Financial.  
  • Tracking budget expenditures by reviewing budget reports, adjusting spending plans as necessary. 

Recruits, trains, directs, mentors, and evaluates staff.

 Tasks Include: 

  • Monitoring work activities and assuring compliance with plans, assignments, policies, procedures, and directives.
  • Developing annual work plans and evaluations for staff and providing professional mentoring.

Provides information to the public regarding fish/wildlife, WDFW lands, and recreation on the WA, and promotes agency values.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:   
    1. Work is a combination of office and field work, estimated at 60% office and 40% field. 
    2. General office hazard include sitting, ergonomics, computer use and tripping hazards. 
    3. Field work hazards include inclement weather, lifting up to 40 pounds, and steep and rugged terrain. 
  • Schedule:   
    1. Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., however the schedule may vary at times due to seasonal demands, emergencies, and time critical assignments.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Occasional travel required. 
    2. Must have the ability to operate a vehicle and hold a valid driver’s license.
    3. Daily travel to and from field includes highway/interstate, county, and primitive wildlife area roads. 
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Position requires the ability to drive a vehicle on primitive roads during all weather conditions, utilizing 4×4 trucks and ATV’s.  
    2. Field work requires the use of equipment such as tractors, skid steers, backhoes, dozer, large trucks and attachments, as well as standard field tools such as shovels, fence post drivers, chain saws, other power tools, binoculars, and spotting scopes.   Field work also requires the knowledge and operation of GPS, smartphones, and digital camera.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Regular contact with external customers and stakeholders including purchasers, contractors, adjacent landowners, governmental representatives, the media, the general public, and wildlife area visitors.  

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.

           AND

  • Three (3) years of professional experience in wildlife management, wildlife biology, wildlife ecology, natural resource science, environmental science, soil science, or range ecology. 

Note: A Master’s degree in the applicable science will substitute for one year of the required experience.

Note: A Ph.D. in the applicable science may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

          OR 

  • Two (2) years as a Fish & Wildlife Biologist 2.

Experience in:

  • The use of ArcGIS.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices, and methods of environmental and land resource management.
  • Agricultural equipment and practices.
  • Methods and techniques of field sampling.
  • Data gathering.
  • Basic research and field investigations.
  • Applicable state, federal and local environmental & wildlife regulations and policies.
  • Technical report writing methods.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • One year of supervisory experience.

Knowledge of:

  • Managing and administering contracts with various funding sources.
  • Wildlife habitat relationships and habitat management principles.

Ability to:

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with individuals and groups within and outside of the organization, both in writing and verbally.
  • Provide leadership, training, guidance, and correction to supervised staff. 

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Acquire and maintain a valid first-aid certification (training provided). 
  • Obtain Public Operator State pesticide license (within 6 months of hire).
  • ATV certification (training provided).
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • Firefighter Type 2.
