As our Fish & Wildlife Biologist, you will provide leadership for steelhead creel surveys on the North Coast of the Olympic Peninsula. You’ll be responsible for timely data management, summarization, analysis, and report writing for statistical creel surveys.

Duties

Our Fish & Wildlife Biologist 1, 

  • Implements creel survey study designs and provides data management and project reporting – ensures that study data collected adhere to study design and the highest standards of scientific integrity. 
  • Participates in sampling and field data collection.
  • Schedules and directs non-permanent field staff.
  • Edits and formats reports for annual publications for the Agency.
  • Provides accurate data to the lead biologist for updating annual forecasting and harvest management models.
  • Participates in creel surveys by interviewing anglers, collecting biological samples, and daily summaries.
  • Coordinates with Agency, Tribal and other government biologists and the public for data collection or sharing.
  • Supervises, schedules, and leads subordinate staff in the collection and compilation of creel data – schedules and assigns tasks on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis depending on project deadlines and environmental factors.
  • Updates lead biologist weekly on progress and personnel issues.
  • Assists the lead biologist as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work Setting, including hazards:    

  • Work is performed in a variety of popular sport fishing boat launch sites and access areas along the rivers – fieldwork is often done in inclement weather.
  • Contact with anglers requires short hikes to fishing areas or driving to creel locations via state, federal, and county roads, as well as local travel along streams on private (logging) roads throughout the district using a state vehicle.  

Schedule:   

  • Typically, work schedule is 40 hours per week, extra hours may be needed to meet agency goals – must work weekends and three weekdays – work days and hours may change due to weather and river conditions.  
  • A flexible hourly and daily work schedule is necessary to perform the assigned tasks including early mornings and late nights – holidays may be included as potential workdays.

Travel Requirements: 

  • Considerable driving is required via state, federal, and county roads, as well as local travel on private (logging) roads. 

Tools and Equipment: 

  • Standard office furniture and equipment (e.g., desk, filing cabinet, computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, etc.). State vehicle, wading shoes or hip boots, rain gear sampling gear, notebooks, and vests.

Customer Interactions:

  • Occasional communication with private landowners or the general public – might encounter negative opinions of governmental agencies and regulations.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science. OR
  • Equivalent education/experience.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Job knowledge and experience:

  • Port sampling, and lake or river creel surveys.  
  • As a crew lead or supervisor.
  • Salmonid species present in the watersheds, their spawning behavior and general life histories and fishery management methods.
  • Of the North Coast area waters.
  • Working with recreational anglers and guides.
  • Of the Quillayute and Hoh rivers’ fishing access area.
  • Creating, organizing, and querying Access and Excel databases. 
  • Using iPads.
  • Creating and entering data into iFormBuilder forms.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
