 KALAMA FALLS HATCHERY 

Fish Program – Hatcheries Division

Anticipated Appointment Length: 3 months

This is an opportunity for hands on hatcheries experience and supporting WDFW in providing sustainable recreational and commercial fishing opportunities. 

In this role, provide hands on assistance to help reach and achieve program production goals at the Kalama Falls Hatchery.

Performing adult fish handling, fish feeding, pond cleaning, and recording data.

The optimal applicants, 

Will have experience in basic fish culture techniques and rearing procedures.

We are seeking a candidate,

Duties

 

Here is what you will be doing,

Adult fish handling, fish feeding, pond cleaning, and recording data: 

  • Collecting, sorting and spawning of adult and juvenile salmon.  
  • Operate pond vacuum and pressure washer for pond cleaning.  
  • Brush intake and pond screens to maintain water flow. 
  • Pick fish mortality. 
  • Record data on field form for specialist to enter.

 

Egg sampling, sorting, and inventorying: 

  • Weigh and count salmon eggs and remove egg deformities and mortalities.

 

Grounds and equipment maintenance:

  • Clean adult fish handling areas, vehicles, hatchery buildings and bathrooms.  
  • Weed eating, raking, weeding and small equipment repairs or maintenance.

Public contact and communications:

  • Respond to questions from visitors or outside entities in a professional manner.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Will work in an outdoor hatchery environment in inclement weather conditions such as rain, snow, sun, and cold or hot temperatures. Typically, the employee in this position will be working outside about 250 days a year. 
    • At times this position will be required to repetitively lift at least 50 pounds.  For example, lifting 44-pound feed bags to empty into buckets to feed fish.
    • Use respirator and other personal protective equipment (PPE) while working with various chemicals used at facility. 
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. 
    • Perform strenuous physical activities, follow instructions, complete assigned tasks, gather and compile data, and use sound judgment.
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, Saturday through Friday 40 hours per week.   
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Minimal travel is required. 
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Hand and power tools, lawn care equipment, egg picking machines, passenger vehicles, coded wire tag (CWT) identification equipment, trash pumps, pressure washers, diesel generators, small gas engine, computers, and software.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • General interaction with the public.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED.  

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

  • Work experience in a hatchery setting.
  • Basic fish culture techniques and rearing procedures.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and Excel software.
  • Water dynamics experience/knowledge such as flows, flow patterns, availability, and temperature. 
  • Calibration of specialized instruments such as scales, and Dissolved Oxygen meters. 
  • Basic math skills including calculating and understanding quantities and proportions.
  • Safe and proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
