FISH HATCHERY TECHNICIAN

 

WDFW HATCHERIES DIVISION

Goldendale, Washington – Klickitat County

 

Anticipated Appointment Length: 4 Months

February 1, 2024 – May 31, 2024

Perform scientific, technical, and related maintenance duties at the hatchery, rearing anadromous and non-anadromous species of fish.

 

Provide sustainable fish and wildlife recreational opportunities in the state of Washington by supporting conservation!

With your experience, you will perform scientific, technical, and related maintenance duties, and assist with rearing fish.

 

The optimal applicant leads by example, has a positive can-do attitude, is eager to work hard, and has excellent fish husbandry skills.

 

You thrive on building collaboration and teamwork, and look forward to working with other staff to meet WDFW program goals, answer questions from visitors, and lead tours of the hatchery facilities.

 

Duties

Here are some things you will be doing in this role,

Perform fish culture: 

  • Feeds fish according to pond populations and weight samples. Adjust feed size and amount fed as directed.
  • Monitors egg and fish production and Disinfects and enumerates eggs.
  • Assists in identifying, sorting, and sampling species for spawning and adult distribution.
  • Cleans ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.
  • Identifies marked adults and collects tags/marks for bio sampling.
  • Assist in inventorying and grading fish populations, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants. 
  • Picks eggs loss by hand or using equipment and incubates for facility programs or shipments.

 

Operation and Maintenance of Facility and Equipment: 

  • Maintains proper water flow and rearing environments as directed.
  • Actively identifies safety hazards and takes action or recommends remedies as appropriate.
  • Perform maintenance duties in and around hatchery and residences to preserve a clean and safe working environment as directed.
  • Applies herbicides or controlled burning for weed control as directed.
  • Maintain road access to residences, hatchery by plowing, grading, and snow blowers.

 

Record Keeping and Reporting: 

  • Proficient use of computers and software to perform various aspects of hatchery work.
  • Record daily fed, mortalities in rearing units, water temperatures and other hatchery related data.
  • Reports changes in fish behavior and rearing environments to supervisors.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Outside in all weather conditions (raining, snowing, sunny, dark, cold or hot). Repetitively lift at least 50lbs.  Use respirator and other PPE while working with various chemicals used at facility. Perform strenuous physical activities, follow instructions and complete assigned tasks, gather and compile data, and use sound judgment.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.
    • May work 10 days on, 4 days off, adjusted by workload.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Travel as needed to meet work demands.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Work with hand & power tools, lawn care equipment, egg picking machines, passenger vehicles, CWT identification equipment, trash pumps, pressure washers, diesel generators, small gas engine, computers and software.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Interact with small community groups and individual constituents on a regular basis.

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • GED or high school diploma.

License: 

  • Valid driver’s license.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
In addition to the required qualifications above, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:

  • Six (6) months of experience working at a fish hatchery.
