Salary- $2,552.00 – $3,294.00

Our Fish Hatchery Technician, 

Performs fish culture.  

  • Feeds fish their calculated daily ration.
  • Monitors fish behavior and health, predominately aware of potential breakouts of columnaris and Ichthyophthirius.
  • Monitors egg and fish production.
  • Administers therapeutants, calculates and administers drugs as prescribed.
  • Identifies, sorts, and samples species for spawning and adult distribution.
  • Cleans ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.
  • Identifies marked adults and collects tags/marks for bio sampling as directed and records data.
  • Collects fish tissue and fluid samples and records data.
  • Performs fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants.
  • Works at all other facilities in the Mt Baker Complex on all aspects of fish culture.

Operation and maintenance of facility and equipment.

  • Operates tractor and vehicles for hatchery use.
  • Organizes and maintains hatchery tools, equipment, and grounds.
  • Communicates safety concerns in a timely and accurate manner (management to staff and staff to management).
  • Uses tools and equipment properly and safely.
  • Stores tools and equipment properly.
  • Monitors water flow and quality parameters; takes water samples and readings, e.g.
  • dissolved gases, suspended settleable solids, and other parameters as required.
  • Maintains proper water flow and rearing environments.
  • Responds to alarms, determining and taking appropriate action.
  • Monitors and maintains facility support systems.
  • Actively identifies safety hazards and takes action or recommends remedies as appropriate.

Conducts Record Keeping and Reporting, and Public Contact. 

  • Responds to questions from visitors to the facility.
  • Conducts organized tours.
  • Interacts with the public in a polite, professional manner.
  • Identifies the best way to respond when faced with difficult-to-answer questions or when information is not readily obtainable.
  • Follows up to ensure that an answer was obtained.
  • Enters data into forms and spreadsheets; demonstrates proficiency with computerized forms and accuracy in recordkeeping (fish mortality, feed sheets, feed inventory, chemical usage).
  • Fills out standard report forms. Accurately fills out agency forms such as fish transfer tickets, hatchery invoice tickets, etc.
  • Submits complete and accurate forms as required.
  • Assists in developing in-house forms.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Work is performed at the hatchery – it includes performing strenuous physical activities and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
    2. Working in and around water is a daily occurrence; lifting or moving feed up to 50 lbs. is required.
  • Schedule:
    1. Typically, Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week.
    2. Schedule may include working ten days on and being off 4 days, adjusted by workload.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Power and hand tools; on-site training provided.
  • Customer Interactions: 
    1. Communicate effectively with the public.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • A valid driver’s license is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with:

  • Basic fish culture techniques; rearing procedures.
  • Water dynamics (e.g., flows, flow patterns, availability, temperature, etc.
  • Basic math (add/subtract/multiply/divide); calculate and understand quantities and proportions
  • Computer knowledge; basic understanding of spreadsheets, word processing, databases.
  • Calibration of specialized instruments (e.g., scales, Dissolved Oxygen meters).
  • Safe and proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of available resources and guides needed to help complete forms and documents correctly.
  • Assisting in training entry-level employees
  • Following instructions and complete assigned tasks, gather and compile data, use sound judgment.
