Fish Hatchery Technician

This recruitment is essential to maintain operations and fulfill WFDW’s legal obligations.  Essential and critical function:  Maintain animal husbandry, maintain hatchery operations to ensure fish/animals stay alive and associated testing/vet response etc.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) currently operates 87 hatchery facilities, the majority dedicated to producing salmon and/or steelhead. There are also 51 tribal hatcheries and 12 federal hatcheries that produce salmon and steelhead for harvest.   Hatcheries have operated in Washington State for more than a century, beginning with a facility on the Kalama River in 1895.

Duties

Assist in daily Hatchery operations
Tasks include:

  • Feed Fish
  • Clean intakes
  • Clean raceways
  • Loading mass marking trailer

Recordkeeping and Reporting
Tasks include:

  • Assist hatchery staff in recording fish, collected, eggs taken, feed and pond mortalities.

Operation and Maintenance of Facility
Tasks include:

  • Washes and clean ponds, intakes, tanks, troughs and egg trays.
  • Operating high pressure pumps and manual cleaning of rearing containers with brooms and brushes.

Operation and Maintenance of Equipment
Tasks include:

  • Assist hatchery staff in performing equipment maintenance.

Other duties as assigned
Tasks include:

  • Occasionally drives a standard truck or flatbed to deliver hatchery supplies.
  • Drive a standard truck or flatbed to deliver hatchery supplies.

Working Conditions:
Work Setting, including hazards:

  • Standing in cold water most of the time collecting fish.
  • Performing strenuous physical activities.
  • Ability to lift-up to 30 pounds.

Schedule:

  • The schedule will be Monday – Friday 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, hours may vary depending on weather and availability of fish.
  • Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.

Travel requirements:

  • Maybe required to travel to other hatcheries to assist in hatchery operations.

Tools and Equipment:

  • Performs mechanical tasks using power and hand tools.

Customer Interactions:

  • Communicate effectively with the public.

  • There is no agency housing available for this position.

Union – WAFHP
These positions are in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Hatchery Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish Hatchery Professionals (WAFHP).

Qualifications
  • Graduation from high school or GED.  Preferred work experience in a hatchery setting.

Knowledge and Abilities Desired:

  1. Basic fish culture techniques; rearing procedures; able to identify adult salmonids
  2. Water dynamics (e.g. flows, flow patterns, availability, temperature, etc.)
  3. Basic math (add/subtract/multiply/divide); calculate and understand quantities and proportions
  4. Computer knowledge; basic understanding of spreadsheets, word processing
  5. Calibration of specialized instruments (e.g. scales, Dissolved Oxygen meters)
  6. Safe and proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment
  7. Knowledge of available resources and guides needed to help complete forms and documents correctly
  8. Applicable agency policies and procedures
  9. Safety regulations
