 HOUSING IS PROVIDED 

Oversee the Sherman Creek Hatchery by supervising personnel, ensuring the successful care, tagging, and planting of 300,000 rainbow trout into Lake Roosevelt, as well as nurturing up to 6,000 White Sturgeon. Similarly, you’ll play a key role in Omak Hatchery’s operations by supervising staff, overseeing fish rearing, and aiding in successful program execution. 

Picture yourself, Working closely with the Spokane Operations Manager with all operations that affect Omak Hatchery including hatchery personnel, budgets, rearing, tagging, planting, training, paperwork, tours, and maintenance.

The optimal applicant, Has effective communication skills and is open to regular travel to directly support the successful operation of the Omak Hatchery.

Some of what our Fish Hatchery Specialist 4 will enjoy doing, 

Supervision: 

  • Carry out personnel actions including recruitment, hire recommendations, evaluations, and corrective action. 
  • Coordinate operations of assigned facilities.
  • Identify training needs and develops training plans.
  • Develop work plans.
  • Ensure safety compliance.

Managing facility production: 

  • Meet with the fish health specialist to ensure production quality
  • Ensure staff maintain records and meet reporting deadlines.

Operations management and compliance:

  • Review, understand, and monitor staffs’ compliance with policies, procedures, laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Resolves issues and problems as they arise and respond to change.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Will work outdoors in inclement weather conditions including hot and cold temperatures, rain, wind, and snow. 
    • Walk, climb, and lift feed bags (up to 50 pounds) on uneven terrain such as docks and loading docks daily. 
    • Fish hatchery and net pen facility includes boat and barge operations on large lakes. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations. 
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, Monday – Sunday, 7:30 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. 
    • 24/7 when on stand-by. 
  • Standby: 
    • Standby is a requirement of this position unless otherwise approved by management. Must be within a 45 minute response time, while preforming standby duties.
  • Housing: 
    • Housing is provided for this position. 
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Travel and overnight stays will be required to attend meetings.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Hand and power tools, lawn care equipment, tractors, forklifts, welding equipment, egg picking machines, water sampling instruments, transport trucks, passenger vehicles, adult fish pumps, adult fish counters, coded wire tag (CWT) identification equipment, trash pumps, pressure washers, diesel generators, small gas engine, computers, and software.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Interact with public, tribes, sportsman groups, and participates with educational presentations and intra agencies. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One (1) year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 3.

OR

  • Associates degree in fisheries technology, biology or closely allied field AND three (3) years of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

OR 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology or closely allied field AND three (3) years of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

Please Note: Four (4) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the Bachelor’s degree.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License. 

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Standby is required for this position unless otherwise approved by management. Must be within a 45 minute response time, while preforming standby duties.
  • First Aid Card is required for this position. Must have or obtain this within three (3) months of date of hire.
  • A valid Class B CDL with an airbrake and tanker endorsement is required for this position. Must have or obtain this within three (3) months of date of hire.
  • Motorboat Operator Certificate Couse (MOCC) Boater Training. Must have or obtain this with-in 3 months of date of hire. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of: 

  • Proper techniques of fish culture, husbandry, and fish culture terminology. 
  • Calculation methods.
  • Operating coded wire tag (CWT) detectors.
  • Fish production protocols and policy.
  • Software applications including Excel, GroupWise, and agency specific applications such as VMTS, Power-Point, FastTrack, and payroll reports.
  • The order and process for completing and approving key forms or requests.

Knowledge of key processes and procedures including: 

  • Union contracts
  • Purchasing protocols and equipment purchasing rules. 
  • Corrective action, EAS, and other HR processes and procedures.
  • Proper calibration and operation of key equipment including flow, dissolved oxygen and total gas meters. 
  • Safety principles and techniques, safe operating procedures.
  • Inventory control.
