(1) 6-month Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 

Hatchery Division – Fish Program – Hatchery

Anticipated start date is June 15, 2021 through December 31, 2021.

 This recruitment is for one (1) non-permanent Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 in the Fish Program, Hatchery Division.

We are seeking one (1) highly motivated and experienced Fish Hatchery Specialist to work alongside a diverse team promoting the conservation of Washington State’s salmonid population.  

 

Duties

 

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) currently operates 87 hatchery facilities, the majority dedicated to producing salmon and/or steelhead. There are also 51 tribal hatcheries and 12 federal hatcheries that produce salmon and steelhead for harvest.   Hatcheries have operated in Washington State for more than a century, beginning with a facility on the Cascade River since 1946.   

This position will support the Agency mission by performing scientific, technical, and related maintenance duties at hatchery facilities and trapping sites within a complex, rearing anadromous and non-anadromous species of fish. 

KEY DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Fish Culture

Tasks include: 

  • Feeds fish their calculated daily ration.
  • Monitors fish behavior, health, egg and fish production.
  • Administers drugs as prescribed.
  • Identifies, sorts, and samples species for spawning and adult distribution 
  • Cleans ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems, identifies marked adults and collects tags/marks for bio sampling and records data.
  • Collects fish tissue and fluid samples. 
  • Performs fish inventories, splits, marking trailer inventories, weight samples, releases, and plants fish.

Recordkeeping and Reporting

Tasks include: 

  • Enters data into forms and spreadsheets (e.g., fish mortality, feed sheets, feed inventory, and chemical usage.)
  • Submits complete and accurate forms as required.
  • Assist in developing in-house forms as required.

Operation and Maintenance of Facility

Tasks include: 

  • Monitors water flow and quality parameters.
  • Maintains proper water flow and rearing environments. 
  • Responds to alarms. 
  • Monitors and maintains facility support systems. 
  • Actively identifies safety hazards and takes action or recommends remedies as appropriate.

Operation and Maintenance of Equipment

Tasks include: 

  • Organizes and maintains hatchery tools, equipment, and grounds. 
  • Identifies and communicates safety concerns (management to staff and staff to management), uses tools and equipment properly and safely

Public Contact and Communications

Tasks include: 

  • Responds to questions from visitors to the facility.
  • Conducts organized tours.
  • Interacts with the public in a polite, professional manner.
  • Identifies the best way to respond when faced with difficult-to-answer questions or when information is not readily obtainable.
  • Follows up to ensure that an answer was obtained.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • All applicants applying for this position should understand that standby is a requirement for all positions in the Fish Hatchery Specialist series.  
  • Management may determine it is necessary to assign it in order to accomplish the goals and objectives of the agency and as necessary to protect the resources of the agency and if assigned, it will be a requirement of the position.

Work Setting, including hazards: 

  • Walking, climbing, lifting, and carrying 50lbs is frequent. 
  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions; extreme heat, freezing cold, rain, wind, snow, walking on river, through trees/brush, gill netting, seining, gaffing. 

Schedule: 

  • Typical work schedule is 40 hours per week. 5 – 8 hours per day, per week, depending on time of year. 
  • 40 hours per week to meet with the occasionally need for overtime due to an emergency or workload demands throughout the complex as needed. 

 Housing: 

  • There is no agency housing available for this position.  Due to this remote setting, housing options in the area may be limited. 

Standby: 

  •  Standby is not assigned 

  • This position may require standby, the employee is responsible for overseeing the facility for the remaining 16 hours of the day. While on standby this position will work ten days and be off 4.

Customer Interactions:  

  • Provide public contacts, tours and communications as needed.  

License:

  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license.  

 

Qualifications

 

  • Associates degree in fisheries technology or closely allied field. 

OR

  • Three years of education towards a bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field.

OR 

  • Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school.  

OR 

  • Three years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.  

Preferred work experience in a hatchery setting.
