Make a Difference in Oregon’s Natural Resources! 

Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon’s fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located at the South Willamette District Office in Corvallis, OR. Work will include WWMP (Willamette Wildlife Mitigation Program) field sites such as Gail Achterman WA (Wildlife Area), and other ODFW wildlife areas and programs including E.E. Wilson and Fern Ridge wildlife areas and the South Willamette Habitat Restoration Crew.

This is a full time, seasonal position from April 1, 2021 – September 30, 2021.

What you will do:

Wildlife Area Activities: Conduct habitat management activities including mowing, spraying and planting. Control vegetation by using rotary mowers and applying herbicides using power and hand sprayers. Participate in habitat development and wildlife status trends by conducting surveys and implementing habitat development plans. Operate and maintain ATV’s, power and hand tools.

Monitoring and Protection of Conservation Easements: Assist biologists, other staff, and volunteers in monitoring and protecting conservation easements. Ensure that areas are adequately posted with signs, pick up litter, maintain and construct roads, fences, gates and nest structures. Investigate practices that do not comply with conservation easements and plans for individual land parcels – report concerns and help plan response.

Provide Technical Advice and Assistance to Project Participants: Assist with plant and animal census and monitoring activities. Assist biologist with review of project acquisition proposals, provides information on location, habitat condition, wildlife population trends, and other criteria factors to evaluate submissions. Assist project proponents with reporting and permitting requirements for land management activities. Assist conservation managers with habitat management expertise and assistance throughout the district.

Reporting and Communication: Summarize monitoring information and draft reports. Complete monthly reports and other special reports as needed. Assist in completing annual reports and federal work plans. Furnish a Weekly Report of Operations for supervisor in a punctual manner. Communicate effectively with members of the public and representatives of other agencies and conservation groups.

Working Conditions

• Frequently required to work outside during inclement weather, long hours, before sunrise and after sunset, on weekends, and irregular work schedules.

• Requires lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds (or more with assistance).

• Frequently deal with members of the public, local residents, department staff and other agency staff requiring a well-developed sense of diplomacy.

• Requires operating ATV’s, trucks and the use of hand and power hand tools.

• Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours.

• This position requires an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on the job use of quads (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, accessible at the following website: www.rideatvoregon.org/. If the selected applicant does not possess this certification, they must obtain it within 30 days of hire as a condition of continued employment.

• This position requires the possession of a Public Pesticide Applicator’s License (PPAL). On your application, be sure to indicate in your job description if you have a PPAL. If the selected applicant does not possess a PPAL, they must obtain within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment.

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:

Minimum Qualifications:

• An Associate’s degree in Wildlife Technology or Agriculture; OR

• Eighteen months of experience in the care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming. (six months of fisheries, fish culture, fish screens, or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).

A higher level degree in Wildlife Science, Agriculture, or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate’s degree.
