Are you interested in working outdoors and applying your skills in a variety of activities involving farming, wildlife habitat development, and maintaining facilities and equipment? The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) is looking for a permanent Fish and Wildlife Technician Senior (Summer Lake Wildlife Area Senior Technician) to assist the manager of the wildlife area in enhancing/managing wetland and upland habitats for the benefit of a diverse array of wildlife and to provide diverse wildlife oriented recreational opportunities to the public. Summer Lake Wildlife Area (SLWA) is located in the Northern Great Basin and has a significant land base well suited to support indigenous fish, wildlife species and migratory waterbirds.  Wetlands and associated uplands provide habitat for a diverse array of wildlife species. Habitat types found on SLWA are of quality and quantity to make a significant contribution to wildlife and migratory waterbirds in this portion of the state. Not from the area? No problem as this position includes housing at a reduced rate. In this position you will be required to live on station in housing provided by the department. Housing for this position includes roughly a 1900 square foot, 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom house with an attached garage and small detached shop.

The goal of this recruitment is to fill the position at the Fish and Wildlife Technician Senior level. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the Fish and Wildlife Technician ($2,837/mo.) to apply, as the department may consider underfilling the position.

What you will do:

Check Station and Hunt Program Administration: Issue daily permits to hunters, checks hunter bag to identify sex, age and species of harvested waterfowl, records hunter use data and maintains computerized data base of hunter use and waterfowl harvest. Answer public information requests in person and by phone. Clean restrooms at campgrounds, parking areas and check stations and restocks supplies.

Biological Data Collection: Monitor habitat development efforts, habitat use and population status and trend by conducting pair surveys, measuring nesting success and conducting brood surveys and population surveys of waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds, gulls, terns, raptors annually, monthly and weekly. Trap, band and/or relocate upland birds, waterfowl and sandhill cranes by use of walk/swim-in traps, airboats and dip nests and rocket nets.

Habitat Maintenance and Management: Use a tractor and mower to reduce height of upland and marsh vegetation. Remove, build and repair barbed wire and electric fences using hand tools and wheel tractor with auger. Set up energizers and solar panels to power electric fences. Build upland game bird and nongame roost structures. Operate tractors, plows, discs, harrows, roto-tiller, drills and fertilizer spreader to plant and grow food and cover crops, trees and shrubs. Culture crops and trees by flood and sprinkle-irrigation, mechanical (pulling, disking, and mowing) and chemical (spraying) weed control.

Planning and Administration: Assist in preparation of a Federal Aid work plan. Oversee operations in the absence of the manager. Assist in monitoring wildlife area’s expenditures. Provide feedback and recommendations regarding area operations, programs and activities in written and oral form. Write annual, monthly and special (as needed) reports about management area operations and outputs.

Wildlife Damage: Receive and respond to wildlife damage complaints. Record information and evaluate type and severity of damage. Recommend standard and routine corrective measures and provide landowner with agency approved material to alleviate damage. Act as a liaison with the District Biologist for unique or complex damage complaints requiring atypical responses. Receive reports of injured or sick animals and responds with appropriate advice and/or recovers that animal for transport to qualified rehabilitation or euthanasia as appropriate.

Working Conditions
• The employee in this position is required to live on station as a condition of employment (unless state housing is not available). The employee must be available to respond to emergency situations.

• Work is performed in all types of weather conditions and may encounter temperature extremes of 100 degrees F to -10 degrees F., with -50 degrees F. wind chill.

• Frequently required to work: outside during inclement weather, long hours, before sunrise and after sunset, on weekends and uneven work schedules. Frequent walking through marsh. Must contend with high density of biting insects from April to October.  Airplane flights and boat trips lasting up to four hours.

• Work with public, local residents and other agency personnel are frequent and a well-developed sense of diplomacy is required.

• Current first aid and CPR cards are requirements of this position.

• This position requires occasional use of a firearm to deliver immobilization drugs and projecting nets for wildlife capture, euthanizing injured or sick wildlife, killing or hazing nuisance animals or birds, collecting animals for research or other studies, and protection from dangerous animals in close quarters.

• This position requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. There are some exceptions to this (e.g., Coast Guard Boat Operator License or commercial fishing license). For further information, access the Web site at www.boatoregon.com. In addition, this position requires the possession of a Public Pesticide Applicator’s License (PPAL), and an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on the job use of quads (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, accessible at the following website: www.rideatvoregon.org/. If the selected applicant does not possess these certifications, they must obtain it within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment.

• Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours.

Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:

Minimum Qualifications for the Fish and Wildlife Technician Senior level:

• An Associate’s degree in Wildlife Technology or Agriculture and two years and six months of wildlife experience in a wildlife program (twelve months of fisheries or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience); OR

• A Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science, Agriculture, or a closely-related Bachelor’s degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework and one year of wildlife experience in a wildlife program (six months of fisheries or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience); OR

• Eighteen months of experience in the care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming and two years and six months of wildlife experience in a wildlife program (two years of fisheries or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).

Minimum Qualifications for the Fish and Wildlife Technician level (UNDERFILL):

• An Associate’s degree in Wildlife Technology or Agriculture; OR

• Eighteen months of experience in the care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming. (six months of fisheries, fish culture, fish screens, or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).

A higher level degree in Wildlife Science, Agriculture, or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate’s degree.
