Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon’s fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located at the Cole Rivers Hatchery in Trail, OR.

This is a full time, temporary position from approximately June 15, 2021-October 31, 2021.

What you will do:

• Maintenance: operate special equipment including trucks, lawn tractors, generators, fish pumps, gas and electric power tools, pressure washer, and farm tractor with attachments; unloaded, store and handle fish food; use and maintain pond cleaning implements and mortality pickers, crowders, dipnets, egg and fry care tools and devices. Performing general maintenance around the hatchery including mowing and weeding.

• Fish Rearing: set up, maintain, and periodically clean rearing containers; feed fish as directed; assist Technicians with periodic sampling; move and handle fish to mark, load, transfer or release.

• Handling of hatchery and wild adult brood stock: ready spawning area and equipment, and have necessary material and supplies on hand; assist technicians with brood stock to determine sex, maturity, ripeness, and health; assist technicians with spawning adults by anesthetizing, taking eggs and sperm.

• Incubation and egg handling: set up and sanitize incubation area equipment to receive eggs; shock, pick, clean up, treat and inventory eggs; remove egg shells and record mortalities.

• Water systems maintenance and operations: maintain hatchery water systems in cleaning intake by cleaning debris from screens using small hand tools; maintain hatchery rearing and incubation environments by cleaning and assisting technicians in minor repairs.

Working Conditions

• Work outdoors, at times during inclement weather.

• Work in or near cold, deep or fast moving water for extended periods of time.

• Requires lifting up to 50-pound sacks of feed, and other heavy materials and equipment.

• Operate trucks, tractors and other equipment

• Handle chemicals used for treatment of fish or disinfecting of equipment for disease control purposes. Work with paint, vehicle fuel, lubricants and solvents during routine maintenance duties. Required to climb ladders.

• Must display a good sense of diplomacy if/when dealing with the public.

• Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours.

Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background information may disqualify you from further consideration.
