This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located at the Elk River Hatchery near Port Orford, OR.

In Port Orford, halfway between Bandon and Gold Beach, you’ll find everything you’re looking for. From spectacular seascapes and mountain hiking trails with panoramic vistas, to art galleries and an authentic Victorian mansion. With ocean, lake, and river fishing, boating, and kayaking, and absolutely perfect wind sailing conditions. But here, there’s a difference. Initial interviews are anticipated to be held via phone, video, or virtual interview due to the current situation related to COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

What you will do:

• Plan, develop and implement assigned hatchery production to meet short and long-term program goals; meet with fish district personnel to plan and implement annual production goals and broodstock collection; coordinate with agency staff on all matters related to hatchery production; assist in evaluating hatchery programs, development of performance measures and evaluate the success or failure of different and new fish culture technology; implement wild and hatchery broodstock collection and development programs. Develop hatchery specific operating policies and implement procedures including a hatchery operations manual and long-range plans for the hatchery including maintenance, improvements, and operations. Handle anadromous and resident domestic and wild adult salmonid brood stock including trapping, sorting, determining maturity and condition, observing for signs of health, collecting samples requested by research and others, marking, measuring, and spawning. Set and follow genetic guidelines of spawning populations. Incubate and handle eggs and fry. Set up rearing containers, provide adequate water flows, maintain proper hygiene in rearing containers, develop feeding schedules, use appropriate diets, monitor fish growth and development, observe fish for diseases and/or parasites and recommend treatments or fish health inspections.

• Supervise employees and volunteers. Plan, prepare and administer the hatchery budget by developing estimates, maintaining expenditure controls, preparing budgets as requested, and monitoring expenditures and purchases. Develop and implement hatchery-specific plans and goals such as affirmative action goals, safety goals, hazardous materials handling procedures, and ADA goals.

• Oversee maintenance and operations of hatchery property, facilities, and equipment. Develop short and long-term plans for remodeling, maintenance, and improvements. Develop preliminary specifications, coordinate design with engineering, work with local contractors, and purchase materials. Assure that preventative and corrective maintenance is accomplished as needed on driveways, parking areas, buildings, and structures, and they are maintained in an attractive user-friendly manner. Assure that preventative and corrective maintenance is regularly accomplished on all vehicles, tractors, pumps, lifts; that power and hand tools remain in safe, efficient, and usable working condition.

Working Conditions
 

• Required to live on station as a condition of employment and work on an on-call basis as assigned and be available to respond to emergency situations.

• Often works in or near cold, deep, or fast-moving water for extended periods. 

• Handles chemicals used in treatment of fish and disinfection of fish handling equipment. 

• Works with paint, vehicle fuel, lubricants, and other solvents during routine maintenance. 

• Displays a good sense of diplomacy when dealing with the public.

• Works a professional workweek, with occasional night work and weekend work (on a rotational basis). Position is not eligible for overtime.
 

Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:

Minimum Qualifications:

• An Associate’s degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture or Aquarium Science and three years and six months of fish culture (care of fish) experience (eighteen months of fisheries, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience); OR

• A Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Science or a closely-related Bachelor’s degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework and two years of fish culture (care of fish) experience (twelve months of fisheries, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience); OR

• Five years of fish culture (care of fish) experience (two years of fisheries, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).

This experience must have included two years of lead work or supervisory experience.
