The Fire and Stewardship Coordinator (FSC) will work with conservation partners and private landowners to manage high quality habitats utilizing a variety of land management practices. The FSC will create and maintain positive working relationships within the conservation community as well as members of the public. This is a grant-funded, two-year term position with possible renewal in successive years.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Fire and Stewardship Coordinator’s primary work location will be the Lebanon, Missouri area, but they will also assist in efforts on other natural areas around the state. The FSC will work hand in hand with conservation partners to set management goals/objectives and supervise work teams to achieve those goals. Prescribed fire will be an essential tool and this FSC will lead burn preparations and assist in implementation, mop-up and monitoring needs. The expectation will be that the FSC is consistently increasing fireline leadership skills and qualifications over time. The FSC should be comfortable utilizing, maintaining, and teaching safe power equipment use on and off of the fireline. The FSC should also be prepared to train staff and lead work teams in the safe application of herbicides to control invasive/non-native species and/or woody species that are impairing natural systems. The FSC will be TNC’s representative in this region, working with private landowners, fire departments, community stakeholders, and educational groups to engage them in conservation.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • May lead or monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers covering a wide geographic area.
  • Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development and fundraising targets.
  • Networks with diverse groups, including landowners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and publicize Conservancy programs/preserves.
  • May work under minimal and/or distant supervision; may make some independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Frequent travel will be required, sometimes on short notice.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and one year of related experience in custodial and ecological land management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with natural systems.             
  • Experience in ecological land management principles.
  • Must be qualified or have equivalent experience as a Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2.   • Experience operating and or repairing various types of equipment and machinery.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1 – 2 years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Some experience managing volunteers or entry level staff.
  • Support an open and inclusive environment and actively participate in diversity, equity, and inclusion learning opportunities.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Ability to recognize plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities.
  • Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation/conservation or similar field.

  • Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timelines.
  • Ability to utilize GIS software and handheld GPS devices for planning activities and reporting work completed.
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.: Word, Excel, Web browsers).
  • Communicate effectively in writing and verbally with varied audiences.
