The employee will conduct botanical surveys in the Monongahela National Forest in areas planned for ground disturbing activities. Timber stands and project areas will be surveyed using the timed meander method covering known or likely habitat for Threatened, Endangered, and Sensitive (TES) plant species, Regional Foresters Sensitive Species (RFSS) and Non-Native Invasive Species (NNIS). Known TES will be monitored using standardized methodology. Under the co-supervision of the WVDNR Ecologist and the Monongahela National Forest Cheat-Potomac Ranger District Wildlife Biologist, duties will include conducting botanical field surveys, monitoring TES populations, collecting tabular and spatial information on TES and NNIS occurrences in project areas, producing written survey reports, completing TES and NNIS spreadsheets, and providing spatial infomation (GPS data) for plant populations. Most field work will be conducted independently in remote locations in rugged terrain.

The duty station for the position will be the Cheat District Office in Parsons, WV. Work will occur throughout the north zone of the national forest. Temporary housing may be available offsite for a fee. Details can be provided upon request. This is a temporary employment opportunity that can be renewed for 2022. 

Qualifications include;

  • Familiarity with federally listed plant species and their habitats in West Virginia.
  • Familiarity with plants on the Monongahela National Forest’s Regional Forester’s Sensitive Plant Species list and their habitats.
  • Demonstrated experience working with the vegetation and plant communities of West Virginia. Work performed in the Monongahela National Forest is preferred.
  • Documented experience conducting botanical surveys.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a dichotomous key to identify plants.
  • Demonstrated experience and skill using MS Office, mapping gps unit, and other software tools.
  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in biology, botany, plant taxonomy or a related field.
