Position Description:

The Equity in STEM Ameri­Corps Mem­ber will serve at the Uni­ver­sity of Wash­ing­ton in the Community Engagement and Leadership Education (CELE) Center. The AmeriCorps Member will assist in the imple­men­ta­tion of a K-12 STEM tutor­ing and men­tor­ing pro­gram to address K-12 STEM suc­cess. They will also develop inno­v­a­tive strate­gies to increase vol­un­teer tutor par­tic­i­pa­tion rates in the STEM fields.

Specific Duties:

  • Recruit UW student volunteers to tutor math and science subjects in Seattle Public Schools and community organizations.
  • Orient and guide new tutors by leading tutor orientation training.
  • Recruit and onboard UW students as mentors for Riverways’ STEM Alternative Spring Break program, located in rural and tribal schools around the state.
  • Coordinate programs in which school-based partners and students visit the UW campus to learn about STEM fields.
  • Provide ongoing support to STEM tutors through assisting in tutor placements.
  • Assist with research and development of STEM outreach curriculum.
  • Have the opportunity to tutor K-12 students for three hours per week.
  • Collaborate with other science outreach programs and student organizations on campus.
  • Conduct organized communication and debriefs for science outreach programs.
  • Have the opportunity to facilitate a Riverways seminar with guidance, in Spring Quarter.
  • Other leadership opportunities as desired!
  • Support CELE-wide programming, recruitment, and training.
