Position Description

Have you been working to address environmental inequities?  Are you looking for a way to work within government to advance racial equity?  Do you have a track record for bringing people together to find and advance solutions?  Does the idea of prioritizing racial justice in climate-related programs, align with your personal mission?  If so, please consider applying to be the Equity & Environment Manager at the Office of Sustainability & Environment (OSE).

As the Equity & Environment Manager you will bring strong supervisory, policy, and stakeholder engagement skills to implement the City of Seattle’s Equity & Environment Initiative.  The Initiative has three primary goals:

  • All people and communities’ benefit from Seattle environmental progress
  • Communities most impacted by environmental injustice are engaged in setting environmental priorities, designing strategies, and tracking progress
  • People of color, immigrants and refugees, people with low incomes, and limited-English proficiency individuals have opportunities to be part of and leaders in the environmental movement and to shape and lead on environmental priorities

You will report to the Climate Justice Director and serve on the Office’s leadership team.

Job Responsibilities

To be prepared for this role, you have experience:

 

  • Developing and leading a project, program, or agenda successfully with high levels of complexity
  • Serving as a strategic advisor to peers and leadership
  • Being a thought leader on equity and environmental justice issues
  • Holding colleagues accountable to incorporate and prioritize racial justice
  • Establishing accountability indicators
  • Supervising and developing staff
  • Providing strategic guidance and recommendations to executive leadership
  • Ensuring involvement and leadership of people of color, people of low incomes, immigrants and refugees, limited-English proficiency individuals, and Native people

You have demonstrated success:

  • Managing and overseeing budgets, consultant contracts, and grant agreements
  • Navigating complex political situations
  • Working across diverse communities and building strong partnerships
  • Convening internal and external stakeholders to discuss and find solutions to environmental equity challenges
  • Creating policies which advance change
  • Representing your organization at conferences and events
  • Making compelling presentations that work for a variety of audiences
  • Fostering a learning culture
  • Persevering despite various challenges
