Description

The Environmental Studies Program at Hobart & William Smith Colleges invites applications for the position of in-person, adjunct professor to teach two sections of a 200-level social science course in the major, Environment and Society, in the Fall 2021 semester. This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefits eligible position. Applicants who are interested in teaching in a liberal arts environment and will contribute to the College’s commitments to inclusivity and diversity are encouraged to apply.

Environment and Society introduces students to the study of relationships between people and the environment from a critical social science perspective, and provides a context for thinking about the social causes and consequences of environmental changes in different regions of the world.  It focuses on how and why the human use of the environment has varied over time and space; analyzes different approaches to decision-making about environmental issues; and examines the relative roles of population growth, energy consumption, technology, culture and institutions in causing and resolving contemporary environmental problems. The course moves beyond the description of environmental issues to examine how social scientists explain how environmental and social factors produce environmental outcomes. Student enrollment in each section is approximately 25. Environmental Studies colleagues will offer significant support to the instructor in developing teaching materials for the course.

Qualifications

PhD or ABD in environmental studies or related social science field; Willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues and students; Prior teaching experience preferred.
