Basic Function

*NOTE:  This is a temporary, part-time position with no benefits for a six-month period. Hours may vary, 20-30 hours/week, depending on program needs. Must be available for weekend and evening work.*
 
Working under the guidance of the Public Education and Outreach team in the Public Works Department – Environmental Services Division, this position will support outreach efforts and assist in related field inspections. 
 Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interact with multi-family and single-family residents, as well as property managers for businesses and apartments, educating them about proper recycling activities.  
  • Inspect and monitor trash enclosures and recycling containers, recording data, and provide ongoing follow-up outreach to multi-family residents and school-aged children, multi-family property managers and maintenance staff, and staff at various businesses. 
  • Provide support for setting up, staffing, and then taking down events, performing various event-related elements including:  planning, promotion, operating, and then evaluating events. 
  • Help with outreach at schools, including visiting schools to help maintain aquariums, and support other outreach efforts. 
  • Help maintain water quality testing equipment and manage equipment checkouts with volunteers.
  • Operate desktop computers, copiers and printers, maintain accurate and orderly files, and record data accurately, and save digital information in specified subdirectories. 
  • Distribute education and outreach materials, and provide input on draft materials. 
  • Help optimize the City’s internal waste reduction and recycling efforts at various facilities. Support the City’s internal recycling and compostable programs. 

 

 

Education and Experience

  • Must have High School Diploma or equivalent 
  • Prior experience in general community outreach (community events, promotional materials, social media) is preferred but not necessary. 
  • Bilingual fluency is desirable 
 
Licenses and other Requirements:
  • Must have valid WA Driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Must be able to pass a national criminal background check.
