Northwestern University’s Environmental Science Program is seeking instructor(s) for two coursesthis Fall 2021 quarter, with classes starting on September 21. The position(s) are non-continuing fixed term appointments. Instruction must be delivered in person on the Evanston campus. Demonstration of excellence in teaching required. Course Descriptions and Details

ENVR SCI 203 – HUMANS AND THE ENVIRONMENT. Environmental science is the interdisciplinary study of how humans interact with the living and nonliving parts of their environment. In this course, we examine current environmental challenges, such as climate change, the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable production of energy, and the implications of human population growth. A case study approach will be used to emphasize the processes of scientific inquiry and discovery.

Pre-requisites – At least 3 college credits in science/math (e.g. EARTH, CHEM, BIOL, PHYS, MATH, STATS, ENGINEERING). Enrollment of ~100 students, with priority enrollment to declared majors and then sophomore/first-year students. Currently scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday at 2:00 to 3:20 pm CT. Some adjustment to the day/times may be possible.

ENVR SCI 390 – GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS) LEVEL 1. Introduction to concepts underlying geographic information systems (GIS) and methods of managing and processing geographic information. Designed for students who have little background but want to learn the fundamentals and applications of GIS. Students will be exposed to both theoretical knowledge and technical skills in this course. Lab assignments and a project will promote students’ application of concepts and skills in solving real-world problems.

Pre-requisites – None. Enrollment of ~ 25 students including both undergraduate and graduate students. Currently scheduled Tuesday and Thursday mornings for lecture and lab. Some adjustment to the day/times may be possible.
